Seth Godin | The Tribes We Lead

For this discussion board you will need to watch the Seth Godin talk, "The Tribes We Lead” found at Ted.com:   http://www.ted.com/talks/seth_godin_on_the_tribes_we_lead.html

In his talk, Seth Godin shares his view that due to the internet, people are moving away from our previous days of mass marketing and are resurrecting the concept of the "tribe.” Godin explains that ordinary, everyday people have the power to lead and create major change.

A multitude of ways are now available to reach an audience: T.V., billboards, radio, newspapers, magazines, social media, and really the list could go on and on. According to Godin, we have moved away from spamming and moved toward connecting. He argues that people want to be a part of a tribe, no matter how "on the fringes” they are. A leader doesn't FORCE people to connect. People WANT to connect! People want to change; people want to be involved. They need a leader to make them aware, connected, and committed.

Based on the talk by Godin, what did you learn about how you can effectively communicate with others in order to lead a project or even a movement?  How can you have the largest and most effective presence?

When responding, I would like you to think of the specific examples Godin used and think about examples in your world. Can you think of a time when you or someone you associated with used a "Tribe” approach in order to accomplish a goal? Can you think of another time when people simply tried to out-yell one another? Which one do you feel is more effective? How does an individual cross the barriers of other tribes with different views or opinions? Fully explain your answers.

And, lastly, tell me how Covey's first habit of Be Proactive directly relates to or overlaps with two or more of the ideas presented in the talk. Please cite directly from Covey and explain how you came to that conclusion.

You do not have to respond to a peer, so make your one discussion post count!

Simon Sinek | How Great Leaders Inspire Action

For this discussion board, you will need to watch the Simon Sinek talk, " How Great Leaders Inspire Action . ”

You will also need to consult your Covey book pages 95-144 Habit #2: Begin with the End in Mind.

According to dictionary.com, success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose and/or the attainment of popularity or profit. Merriam-Webster adds that success can be defined as "obsolete,” as in the end result. Farlex (yet another source of definitions) adds that success is also the extent of such gain. Three solid sources give a clear picture of the definition of success. So why is it then that some people are able to achieve and maintain success while others are unable to grasp or hold on to it?

Sinek points out that if a group of people has the same access to resources and opportunities, and some are able to succeed where others fail, then another factor must be at play.

Covey (pg 106) in Habit 2 discusses the best way to begin with the end in mind is a Personal Mission Statement. Covey explains that within the individual, his/her personal mission statement is "fundamentally changeless” because it is based on the individual's principles and is the basis for his/her daily decision making.

For this forum there are three parts:

Part I:  Explain your understanding of Sinek's illustration of "What, How, and Why.” In what ways do you agree and/or disagree with Sinek?  Does Covey agree with Sinek?  Cite specifically from both resources.

Part II:  Sinek believes that the people you do business with are a reflection of the "What, How, and Why” idea. Give an example of this idea and explain how this idea impacts whether a business will succeed or fail.

Part III:  Covey gives a few examples of personal mission statements (pages: 106-107, 136) and, beginning on page 128, explains how to write and use a personal mission statement. Use the information in the Covey book and the steps below to construct your own personal mission statement.

1. Brainstorm, capture your ideas on paper.

· If there are influential people in your life, what qualities do they possess that you admire?

· Who do you want to become? What accomplishments do you want to achieve?

· Thinking only of today, what is most important to you?

2.  Breathe, take a break, and walk away from your writing. Give your mind time to process. Gather your thoughts.

3. Review what you've written and circle keywords, ideas, phrases that you want to include in your mission statement.

4. Work it out. Compose a rough draft. Revise it. Analyze it. Does it encompass everything you stand for?

5. Complete your mission statement and post it to the forum.
