A good response to a written question should combine your personal experiences with theory to support your work. Be thoughtful and insightful and it must demonstrate critical thinking and analysis. A good response to the question should be about 3-4 paragraphs, and address all of the issues that are raised. (Introduction, body and conclusion.) Thank you.

M7D1: Terrorism Catastrophes

The September 11, 2001 attacks on the U.S. homeland produced the most sweeping reorganization of the American security culture in history. The fear that arose following the attacks was matched by concerns that the United States was ill-prepared to prevent or adequately respond to determined terrorists. Homeland security became a part of everyday life and culture shifted because of the 9/11 attack. Although some degree of terrorist violence is likely to occur domestically, the possibility of another catastrophic attack leaves the question of what impact these events have on society.

Respond to the following:

1. How serious do you think is the threat of “catastrophic terrorism?” Can catastrophic attacks be prevented, or simply mitigated? Explain your answer in full, and use citations and references to support your position.

Reflect on current events. How can the United States prevent catastrophic attacks, such as 9/11? Can these attacks be prevented or simply mitigated by the homeland security structure in the U.S.? Explain your answer, and use citations and references to support your position.

M7D2: The Effects of Catastrophic Events on Society

Since September 11, 2001, the culture of the United States has shifted in many ways. Not only did the president take actions to strengthen procedures and process to better secure the country from terrorist attacks, but differences of tolerance toward different religions, cultures, and races have come back to the forefront since the Modern Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s

Respond to the following:

2. Refer to resources describing the U.S. PATRIOT Act and Freedom Act. Overtime, how have these legislations affected the civil liberties of all Americans? Does the culture of homeland security include protection for all Americans?  What psychosocial impact might it have on the victims and their families?
