· Chapter 13 Qualitative Data Analysis

· Chapter 14 Quantitative Data Analysis

M7D1: Qualitative Data Coding

We will discuss the major forms of qualitative data coding.

1. In using the Grounded Theory Method of qualitative data collection and analysis, which of the three data coding approaches do you think might be applied to your research topic, and why?

My topic proposal is:

Crime and Mental Illness. What can be learned about how mental illness influences whether or not someone is likely to commit crimes? Are certain mental illnesses more prone to criminal behavior?

Hypothesis

• A relationship between mental illness and criminal behavior, violence, and recidivism

• The link between victimization that is violent on the mentally ill with the violent offending

• The significance of over-presentation of mentally ill individuals in the system of criminal justice

M7D2: Quantitative Variables

We will discuss the goals of univariate, bivariate and multivariate analyses.

2. Explain the goals of univariate, bivariate and multivariate analyses.  Which of these would most likely be applied to your research topic? What would that analysis tell us about your topic and/or the variables or subjects?

My topic proposal is:

Crime and Mental Illness. What can be learned about how mental illness influences whether or not someone is likely to commit crimes? Are certain mental illnesses more prone to criminal behavior?
