Google, who is one of the most well-known internet companies had major issues with the Chinese government in regard to censorship.  Google attempted to compete in China and were ready with what they thought were the necessary resources to gain advantage over Baidu.  “They each bought or invested in local Internet companies and hired Chinese executives, and they worked to show sensitivity to the byzantine social customs of the world’s most populous country.” (New York Times, 2010.)  However, Baidu was allowing piracy of songs and shows which Google could not contend with at the time.

Ebay was a company that faced issues when trying to expand globally in China and Japan.  They were unable to compete with the existing competitor TaoBao in the industry.  Customers did not have trust in the new company.  They did not like that they had to enter their credit card information to buy something.  It was noted that Ebay “did not adjust its strategies and purchasing methods according to local preferences.” (International Business, 2017.)  Ebay was eventually able to come back and be successful overseas but it took multiple attempts that had previously failed.
