DNA determines ancestry

The origins of our species lie in Africa. Our DNA describes our movement across the globe. The genetic ancestry testing is a way in which people can understand their family history and what they could, therefore, learn from relatives of historical descent (Thompson, 2013). The variations in the DNA provide basis and arguments on which an individuals ancestry could have come from. For instance, the source claims that the variations in the Y chromosomes that are passed from parents to offspring can be used to determine the ancestry in the male species. The examination of Y chromosomes is only done on males since females do not have the Y chromosomes. The source also claims that Y chromosomes are passed on in the same family pattern and that is why the testing on the Y chromosome is used to determining the relationship between two families with the same surname. Additionally, the source also claims that mitochondrial DNA testing is also used in determining the ancestry. For instance, the source claims that both males and females have the mitochondrial DNA which is passed from their maternal parents and it tends to provide information on the female ancestral line. The source is reliable in that in recent studies; there has been the use of DNA technology in paternal cases where the paternal parent’s DNA is tested to identify if it is a match to that of the child’s.
