Assignment 3: 2 VoIP Part 1 (Work Breakdown Structure) Deliverable 1:  Summary Charles Tinsley CIS 517 Professor Brown May 6, 2018

3 IT projects are similar to projects in other domains, and they involve similar planning, organizing, coordinating, managing, closing, and so on phases.  4 Also, IT projects are undertaken by a group of people who form a project team under the leadership of a project manager or a scrum master.  3 The purpose of an IT project is to achieve the specified goals and objectives as well as align the identified goals with the allocated budget, space, time and human resources.  5 Project’s goals are aligned with allocated resources and environmental dependencies to avoid underachievement such as poor quality of service (QoS) effects.  Also, it helps in ensuring scalability and performance factors are considered widely (Sorli & Stokić, 2017).  3 . As the designated leader in deploying a new VoIP phone system for my company, I would use strategically and tactful methods in managing the project.  4 The campus has a total of three buildings which each hosts 20 to 50 desktop workstations, and therefore a good network with efficient bandwidth is the best option to eliminate packet delay, traffic congestion and to uphold the scalability factor.  3 To achieve an efficient bandwidth, the project will deploy a local area network (LAN), ensure proper switch and routers implementation, an efficient internet connection, an effective connection to the PSTN, a reliable VoIP service provider, a good VoIP PBX, and modern desktop VoIP phones, softphones, and USB headsets.

In this case, the project budget is $250,000, and the project will commence on November 1st.  It will last for the next 90 days, and all IT department members, as well as the project partner, have been allocated different deliverables.  Oracle Professionals are the designated project partners.

5 A Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is an illustration of the activities that need to do to ensure project completion.  3 It should be in an orderly structure that clearly outlines the project activities, deliverables such as schedule and quality requirement.  Work breakdown structure defines the best strategies for achieving the specific project objectives, and the project manager will use it to accomplish the project’s objectives.  5In this case, the work breakdown structure will involve the following stages in a sequential manner;  3 Initiation, Planning, Execution, Monitoring and Controlling, and Closing (Schulze, 2016).

Project management practices involve the application of project development skills, knowledge, experience, tools, and techniques.  They include using techniques such as planning, organizing, managing, and coordinating project management activities. Project management practices should, therefore, be widely considered before commencing any project.
