SOCIOLOGY 1
Racism
Hornlein (2017) authored an article that fails to comprehend the structural and systemic nature of racism. In the article, Hornlein (2017) argues that racism does not exist and further states that what people think is racism is simply a confusion drawn over certain attributes that people have such as skin color, their value, and people. The author is misinformed as racism refers to misconceptions, prejudice and aggression that is directed towards a person based on their skin color.
Neoliberalism
Durango nursing home is an example of a for-profit long-term care home that has experienced a high number of deaths during the coronavirus pandemic. The nursing home operations conform to neoliberal concepts that are an approach that favours free-market capitalism, whereby firms are free to pursue for-profit activities while maximizing their profit-generating potential (Armstrong, 2019).
Nursing homes are where some of the most vulnerable individuals work and live. In many nursing homes, the work conditions make it challenging to deliver high-quality care as good as it can be. For over eight years, this article argues that a team of health professionals have been searching for promising techniques that treat families, residents and staff with respect and dignity in ways that can also ensure happiness and joy (Armstrong, 2019). Although there are frequent ideas worth sharing, there is a disturbing trend towards privatization.
Privatization is making many nursing care homes to shun away from the shared responsibility and democratic-decision making and the notion that the public sector functions based on the logic of service e to all. Liberalization and for-profit fact make many nursing homes succumb to pressure from powerful forces outside and inside the government pushing for increasing profits and privatization on both fronts (Armstrong, 2019). Nonetheless, the extensive variations in nature and the extent of liberalization are not investable, but the article showcases various alternatives (Armstrong, 2019). Liberalization is causing dangerous times when government leaders and nursing care sponsors move towards privatization and taunting away from citizens.
