THE MEMOIR
Writing Project #3
Rhetorical plan and typed draft due for PEER REVIEW DAY: Thursday, April 5, 2018
Final copy due: Tuesday, April 10, 2018
Specifications to follow: Memoir must be typed and double-spaced.
Memoir should be a minimum of 3 pages and maximum of 5.
Set all margins to 1 inch.
Use 12 point Times New Roman font.
Your writing of this assignment will be based upon our class discussions regarding the elements of the genre, memoir.
YOUR TASK:
Recall a person, a place, or an event from your past, and write a memoir about it. Our class discussions and exercises as well as the sample student memoirs I shared with you should help you to zero in on a subject for your memoir.
GIVE YOUR MEMOIR A TITLE! Points will be deducted if there is not a title.
HOW TO PROCEED:
The handout “Writing Memoir” has some useful tips and ideas for choosing a topic. Also, you may want to consider the topics you wrote about in your character sketch. Perhaps you found a great idea for your memoir through the mapping exercise that you did in class.
Try to incorporate into your memoir the “baby steps” and “thoughtshots” techniques we practiced in class. Doing this will ensure that your memoir contains details and insights essential to effective writing.
EVALUATION OF YOUR MEMOIR:
I will be looking especially for: 1. a clear focus and significant purpose to your memoir
2. well-selected details for your purpose and audience
3. effective, vivid descriptions of people, places, and things
Once your memoir has been peer reviewed in class, do your best to edit it for grammar, punctuation, and spelling. It is always helpful to ask a friend or family member to read it over and edit it for errors even after you have “finished” it. Read your essay out loud, and you will often find errors you missed before!
