Course Description and Objectives:

This course is designed to investigate the study of Human Anatomy and Physiology, which requires an understanding of the levels of organization and systemic functionality of the human body. The basics of the course study would include the study of cells, tissue types, and homeostatic mechanisms. The course aims to explore each organ system, which will consist of the structure and function of each organ and the processes within the system. There are lab materials along with lecture to explain how the human body functions that are directly related to their structure.

Student Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, students will be able to recognize and explain the principle of homeostasis, the anatomical structures, and the physiological functions of body systems. Similarly, students will be able to identify the interrelationships within and between anatomical and physiological systems of the human body. Lastly, students will be conversant with the identification of specific cells, tissues, and types of bones in the human body.

Teaching methods that we used in this course

The teaching methods that we used throughout the course is a combination of teaching strategies methods to teach the undergraduate human anatomy class. First, we used plastic models in the lab for facilitating active learning and student engagement throughout the human anatomy course. Also, the human model that we have consisted of the human skeleton and muscles. Secondly, we used prosections and cadavers' dissections, which allow students to see all organs and tissues present at once and allowing students to understand the physical nature of the human body tissues.

Furthermore, the cadavers’ dissections provide students hands-on activity to encourage knowledge of skills that apply to clinical conditions in future careers. Lastly, we utilized computer-assisted technology to support students in learning human anatomy in their choice place and time. For example, if a student gets sick and he is not able attend the class that day so they can access this technology anytime and learn the materials of the course that he missed in the lab.

The resources of the human anatomy and physiology class

The resources of the human anatomy and physiology class for students included online lectures in the YouTube in each lesson. Also, Materials such as images and extra reviewing sheets on the Pilot and Notebook were availed in the university's bookstore on campus. Also, Dr. Ritucc's was recording his voice during the lectures and uploaded to the Pilot. In summation, the academic success center offered free tutoring services to students who are taking the Human Anatomy and Physiology course.

Exams and quizzes of human anatomy and physiology course.

There will be four physiology lecture exams, each covering a particular section of the physiology material presented in the lecture. The exams were formatted to comprise multiple-choice questions, true/false questions, matching and comparing questions. The CaTs will grade the exams. Also, there will be six lab quizzes, a midterm and exam final lab cover anatomy materials. These quizzes and exams will be comprehensive.

.Lecturer's responsibilities

I have many responsibilities in the human anatomy course and more so in the laboratory section. To start, I have to teach from six to nine hours the lab portion of the anatomy every week. Secondly, I have to cover an open lab before an exam or test and to prepare for class, sitting up exams, grading lab exams, and answering emails. Thirdly, I have to attend weekly graduate teaching assistance meetings and lectures with Severt. Also, I was proctor in the anatomy and physiology exams and quizzes. In addition, I regulated contacts with my students to help them if they had difficulty with something by e- email. To top everything up, I am responsible for the administration of anatomy quizzes and exams.

All these are the expectation of a graduate teaching assistant who wants to be professionalism in their work.

As regrading of behaviors

As regrading of behaviors, I never talk about a student's grade or tell anyone a student's grade. As regrading of behaviors, I do not complain or talk negative about students or other grade teaching assistants and refrain from making a student feel inferior. As an example, how do you not know that I have said it one hundred times? Too, I do not show that I am tired or annoyed when a student asks me to repeat or show them a structure again.

Personal Reflection

I recall that when I started teaching my students the Human Anatomy and Physiology course, I found many students struggling with some issues in the human lab portion. Some students had a challenge when it came to an understanding of the ligaments of the shoulder and hip joints. For instance, students were struggling with the naming of ligaments that stabilize the shoulder joint. Notable examples include the acromioclavicular ligament and coracoclavicular ligaments. Other students were struggling with different types that stabilization and supporting hip joints such as iliofemoral, sociomoral, and pubofemoral ligaments.

On the same note, it can be identified that most students were struggling with the bones siding. During an exam or quiz, students had difficulty sided individual bones on either the right or left-hand side on the body, such as clavicular, humers, and femoral bones. This came about because they have to flip their mental imagery upside down.

Also, there were some directional terms that students confused a lot. These terms included lateral and medial, anterior and posterior, and proximal and distal directional terms. Examples of their use can be seen in the identification of the nipple as lateral to the breastbone, and the nose is medial to the eye. Also, the naval is anterior to the spine; and the spine is posterior to the breastbone. Again, the elbow is proximal to the wrist; and the wrist is distal to the elbow.

In summation, also I realized that students had challenges when it came to spelling out some words. Any errors that occurred changed the whole meaning of the answers in their exams. A notable word that some students misspelled is coronoid instead of coracoid bones. While they may look very similar, they slightly sound different.

Personal Input

I tried to interpret, summarize, and rethink the whole concept of the anatomy course and apply the deep approach theory that I learned from my literature review. By mastering the course material, I have managed to teach my students how to understand the course material, not just memorizing what they learned. In this manner, I have consistently informed my students why understanding the course materials is essential in their future careers. By knowing the names and parts of the bones in the human body during the lab, one is better equipped to address injuries in the future career.

During reviewing session in the open lab, I always asked students what does his preferences to learn the specific materials on the lab. for example, when I asked a student why he was not able to comprehend the materials of this section. To address the issue, I asked whether he preferred to learn the idea by using a drawing on the paper and he gladly accepted. In this manner, he was able to understand the elements of the lecture throughout the reviewing session. Feasibly, I acted as guided to allow my students to choose what methods of learning they preferred. Also, I try to provide students with positives reinforcements and encourage them to learn new concepts that were presented in the class. I answer any question that students may have or may be struggling with. As such, I provide good explanations in the easiest way to them.

Another way that I encourage and increase confidence in the students is by pushing them to teach me their learned concepts. Also, I encourage students to teach each other in the group because some students don't understand when I was explaining the materials to them. In this manner, most students feel more comfortable and thereby understand more when other students are explaining to them. In summation, this approach does promote not only active learning in the classroom but also builds high self-confidence in my students.

My survey resulted to the students

Participants were 40 students from the section of the undergraduate human anatomy and physiology course. Of these students, 30 were female, and 7 were male. Students' major was: 30 nursing, one exercise science, one health education, and one physical therapy. Students were invited to take the survey to answering two questions, which were included the reason for taking the human anatomy and physiology class and what they expect the level of difficulty in human anatomy and physiology will be? The result of the survey was a vest majority of the students indicated that the level of the class difficult was hard and very hard about 30 students. In contrast, a few students mentioned that the level of the class difficulty was neither. Also, the class was required as part of their major.

Conclusion

It may be identified that being a teaching assistant is quite challenging and tedious. This is, however, not the case. As long as one has a passion for teaching and learning at the same time, they can pull it through victoriously. By actually mastering one's course in as far as objectives and outcomes are concerned, one can understand and appreciate the teaching and examining methods involved. In the end, the class participation will dictate on how to go about the whole process time and time again. All in all, I am proud of the strides that I have made with my students, for I believe that I have given them my best.
