Fall Quarter 2018 Idea Proposal for Research Paper / Project Due Thursday November 15
(early morning before class) (no usual write-‐up this week)
Final Research Project Paper Due Monday, December 17 (with discussions / check-‐in’s / progress reports in class before due date)
Format
• A research project with accompanying paper • About 4-‐6 pages following IEEE conference paper format: hTps://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/ conferences/publishing/templates.html
Type
• Papers / Projects may vary – An analysis of a specific theme or topic
• E.g. review background literature, expose gaps, propose work; or • E.g., review background literature and find new insights into a problem area
– A soZware development project • E.g., review background literature, propose new soZware tool or algorithm, evaluate, and report results and significance
Content • Can include (for example):
– Mo\va\on – Summary of background research – Why exis\ng research is not sufficient – Your idea / approach
• For a survey or analysis of a topic vs. a development project, your idea or approach is about new insights into the area.
– Results or findings • And very importantly -‐ References
– i.e. you paper requires cita\ons and a corresponding reference sec\on
– For a 4-‐6 paper, about 12-‐21 references

extreme)
• Should include – Some references from papers in class but less than half (e.g. if you have 12 references, 4-‐5 would be from class)
Choosing a Topic (1) • Refer to the areas in one of the following sources: – Papers / topics in this class!
• Including topics by guest lecturers – Boehm’s paper -‐ A View of 20th and 21st Century SoZware Engineering
– The “SoZware Phase II Reading List” – A session or set of topics in a relevant Conference Series

• Possibly others, but for other alterna\ves, ask approval!
Choosing a Topic (2)
• Are you working on a thesis oriented masters degree?
• Are you exploring ideas for a PhD topic? • Are you curious about a topic this gives you an excuse to read about?
• Are you working on a scholarship applica\on? … • Try to make it relevant to you, but also connected to the broad themes of the class.
