Instructions to view simulation:

· Scroll down to Simulation Scenario: Postpartum Hemorrhage and click on the title.

· Watch the 9 ½ –minute Simulation.

· “It is 7:00 pm. You are assigned to provide care to Susan Brown and her newborn this evening. The nurse assigned to Susan Brown during the day shift will give you report.”

· Take notes just as you would if you were receiving report for a patient in clinical.

Now re-watch the simulation video, stop at the blue prompts, and answer the questions in a different font or ink color. ***After completing the questions submit this document into the Alternative Assignment dropbox.

· Watch the PPH simulation on video and stop at the end of the hand-off report (2:21) Pause the video.

· Answer the following questions:

· What are some best practices that you noticed when the two nurses first entered the room?

· Was there anything that could have been done differently/better?

· What did you think of how the handoff report was delivered?

· Was it organized and complete?

· What did you think of the content of the report?

· Based on the report/patient history, what risk factors for PPH can you identify?

· Pause the video after vital sign assessment (3:52) just before the nurse checks the fundus.

· What best practices did the nurse employ before and during the first part of the assessment?

· Pause the video in the middle of the PPH code (6:04) right after the midwife calls for 10L of oxygen

· When Midwife Amy enters the room, she asks Nurse Caroline, “What’s the situation?” Comment on Nurse Caroline’s response.

· Why did Midwife Amy ask for a Foley to be inserted?

· What did you think of the vital sign results? (BP: 95/55; P: 116 R: 22 Pulse Ox: 94)

· Pause the video at the end of the PPH code, when Midwife Amy requests the team to debrief

· Review the other interventions and discuss why each was important:

· 10L oxygen rebreather mask; 100 ml LR bolus

· Meds: Ketorolac 30 mg IVP; Pitocin 30 units IV, Cytotec 800 mg rectal

· Procedure: Internal removal of retained placental fragments

· Discuss the orders that Midwife Amy gave after manual removal of placental fragments

· Comment on the vitals:

· BP: 99/44 P: 116 Pulse Ox: 94 (during hemorrhage code)

· BP: 108/72 P: 102 R: 22 Pulse Ox: 98 (at end of code)

· How well do you feel the staff communicated with Susan

· What did Nurse Caroline say/do to provide reassurance?

· How well did Midwife Amy communicate with Susan?

· How did the team communicate during the entire scenario?

· After video has ended

· What adjectives can you use to describe the environment during the PPH code?

· Did anything surprise you?

· What does Family-Centered Care (FCC) mean to you?

· Do you think the healthcare team practiced FCC? Why or why not? Provide examples from the scenario.
