Persuasive Essay: Climate Change

Climate change has destabilized the Earth’s temperature equilibrium, and its extensive effects are evident in humans and the environment. Climate change impacts have exceeded beyond high temperatures, affecting ecosystems and communities around the world. Essential resources like water, transportation, energy, agriculture, wildlife, ecosystems, and human health are experiencing climate change's severe effects. According to Parry et al. (2019), global temperatures will continue rising for decades due to greenhouse gases that result from human activities. In this regard, various communities worldwide may face food insecurity, health, and environmental issues. Human-induced warming contributes to the naturally varying climate in a country, leading to difficulties in predicting the essential resources' future.

Food supply efficiency depends on weather and climate conditions. While agricultural activities can be adaptable, changes like increased water stress, temperatures, and diseases are crucial challenges to ranchers, farmers, and the entire population. For instance, Orking & Clima (2018) expect the world population to grow to nearly 10 billion by 2050, meaning that there will be 3.5 billion more people to feed. In this sense, agriculture around the world needs to increase production and yields. However, Parry et al. (2019) feel that climate change impacts – extreme weather, higher temperatures, sea level rises, increasing levels of carbon dioxide, and drought – threaten to inhibit the quantity and quality of global food supply. Climate change will affect crops, meat, fish, and other global food supply fundamentals since farmers may not overcome the natural change.

Climate change will also raise critical concerns about human health in the future. According to Orking & Clima (2018), human health is vulnerable to climate since the changing environment will trigger more heat, poor air quality, more waterborne diseases, and diseases transmitted by rodents, insects, and other living organisms. Climate change raises critical concerns about air and water quality, which may lead to various health problems. Unfortunately, some countries might be inefficient in mitigating health problems. For example, Parry et al. (2019) suggest that people in developing countries are most vulnerable to climate change health risks due to inadequate healthcare facilities.

Moreover, climate change has affected ecosystems by modifying habitats. Timing of events, such as egg-laying, flowering, are shifting, as species alter their home ranges. Oceans are experiencing severe climate change effects because they absorb higher levels of carbon dioxide. Orking & Clima (2018) argue that the ocean absorbs thirty percent of the carbon dioxide from burning fuels. Thus, oceans have become acidic and toxic to marine life. Thermal expansion has caused rising sea levels, leading to erosion and storm surge in coastal areas.
