Unit 5 Needs Assessment Project
Training Needs Assessment
Tesla
Tesla, Inc. (formerly Tesla Motors), is an American multinational corporation based in Palo Alto, California, that specializes in electric vehicles, lithium-ion battery energy storage and solar panel manufacturing (through the subsidiary company SolarCity). Due to the time it takes to manufacture one of their vehicles, Tesla has taken a sharp reduction in revenue of $710m net loss this year alone. It is currently uncertain if Tesla will be able to keep up with production demands and recover due the competitiveness of the automotive industry.
An immediate area of focus for the company is breaking the cycle of overpromising and under delivering. This means that Tesla will urgently need to find a way to keep up with production demands. In today’s industry, there are not many electric vehicle competitors. However, it all boils down to needs vs wants for consumers. Many of them don’t have the time to wait for months or years to get an electric vehicle and they are opting for just purchasing normal fossil fuel cars. Tesla must do a better job at taking advantage of the uniqueness of their concept. Knowledge training for current employees is of utmost importance since they have more employees than other automotive companies but their production numbers per vehicle is below average and they have high safety related incidents which also impedes the production of vehicles..
The owner and CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, has acknowledged that there are too many robots involved in the manufacturing of vehicles and that their personnel resources are not employed to the best of its ability. Additionally, there has been an increase in workplace related injuries within the employees which points to unsafe workplace practices. Musk recognizes that he must reduce automated manufacturing and instill an environment of safety within the work center. That’s why he wants to implement a program that will include, organizational, person and task analysis. In order to collect substantial data questionnaires, focus groups and extant data will be used. For Tesla, training needs will focus on internal growth, product development and continuous process improvement and innovation.
Organizational Analysis
Tesla’s Business strategy is to create the best quality electric car out there. Determining the need for training and the implementation of safe work practices was first discovered through the use of questionnaires. Musk has admitted that the training was needed based on his reponses to the questionnaire provided. There were several pressure points that reaffirmed the need for training. As previously discussed, many Tesla workers report safety hazards mostly related to unsafe usage, handling and storage of chemicals. The Worksafe occupational safety group in Oakland, CA advised that between 2014 and 2015, the Tesla plant reported accidents at a higher rate than the national average for the auto industry. (Taylor, 2017). It was also determined by the CEO that he would collaborate and do everything possible to promote a work environment that instilled the importance of work center safety. He also stated that he would periodically review any reports of employee injury and take steps to prevent further issues with proactive communication and educational efforts. Andre Rivera was brought in as the production training manager and Mike Wilson, director of the Occupational and Environmental Health program at the BlueGreen Alliance will be providing training on safe usage of chemicals. The company should strive for:
· Alignment with business strategy – inline
· Effective training – to be created
· Measurements to decrease chemical incidents – to be created
· Management Supports Training – inline
Person Analysis
Another important aspect to be considered to truly determine the companies needs is the person analysis. A focus group was assembled that consisted of the CEO and employees from each department. The focus group helped determine training needs and discovering a disconnect in the current handling of hazardous material training. The outcome was that it is hard to keep up with productivity when the employees are hurt from lack of proper training. This affects manpower and the companies financial and production goals. The employees will be paid for attending the training. Tesla will be able to determine effectiveness of training by evaluating the safety incident reports and hopefully there will be a reduction in the amount of reports per quarter.
It was determined that only the employees with access to the hazardous material rooms would need the training (Baker, 2017). This includes the janitor in charge of cleaning the room as there is a potential for the employee to come in contact with it. Training will begin on 1 January 2019 and employees will receive yearly refresher training. This training will also be included in the new hire process and will include a test. This will help determine a potential employees current knowledge on the subject and their capability to understand the importance and ability to handle hazardous material.
Task Analysis
Because of Tesla’s current safety incidents regarding improper handling of hazardous material, compliance with OSHA and Labor Educational Health Regulations knowledge is necessary. Extant data will help determine gaps between current and desired performance and knowledge. Below is a list of tasks needed from every employee. This list was developed by using the questionnaires, focus groups and extant data.

The intent of this needs assessment was to determine why Tesla could not keep up with production demands. It was discovered that lack of training in the proper handling of hazardous chemicals was causing safety concerns and incidents that were affecting manning and hence, productivity. Employees were not able to work for days perhaps weeks when they had a chemical related injury. This is a cause of concern as chemicals have proven to have the potential to cause permanent health issues. This needs assessment will help Tesla determine the level and intensity of training needed for their current employees and help set the standard for future ones through the hiring process. By promoting a healthy and safe work environments, Tesla employees will better be able to keep up with job and production demands.
