Preliminary Research Statement Underage drinking leads to higher crime rates around the University of Tennessee - Chattanooga. The problem is the higher crime around campus which causes an unsafe environment. The other problem is underage drinking because this is unsafe for the person drinking. I will expand on what kinds of crimes are higher than normal in the areas surrounding campus. The community would benefit from further research on this topic because once they have the right understanding of the issue, solutions can be implemented. The university staff and students will also benefit from having a safer environment to be in. My primary audience would either be students or the university police or the chattanooga police. I will need to learn the actual statistics for this but I have first hand experience with this topic from living at Douglas Heights next to campus. It was very dangerous and the students who lived there were always drinking. The police were called there more than 800 times in the 3 years it has been open. I think the majority of calls related to drunk students are either something they caused or for themselves. The statistics will prove this and it's right next to campus so because of the strict alcohol rules on campus, all the students would go there and cause problems. I hope to solve this.
