Translating a Scholarly Article in Your Field of Study for a Public Audience

The two articles I chose are journal articles from the genre trade publications. The audience in these example is practitioners of information technology field. This article will interest people who are interested in learning about emerging technologies in data centers. Cloudlet and fog computing will be a new replacement for data centers. In the library when searching for key words like edge technology and data centers, these articles appear in the Information technology and computer science filter. I choose the latest articles because they have updated information and sources included.

List information about each author’s credentials. Is the author a scholar, a journalist, a blogger? What is the level of the author’s expertise?

First article authors:

Irfan Mohiuddin has a M.sc in computer science from King Saud University. He is conducting a research along with working on his Ph.D. at KSU. His research is based on cloud computing. He is a scholar and have written a lot of peer reviewed which you can find in Mason Library search.

Ahmad Almogren: He has completed his Ph.D. degree in computer science from Southern Methodist university. He worked at Riyadh college of technology as an assistant professor. His research area is computer security and data consistency and is a vice dean of computer and information science at KSU. Both of these authors are scholarly authors and have been researching in the field and worked on scholarly articles.

Article 2:

Niezi Mharsi has a MS degree from Versailles university, France. He is a Pursuing Ph.D. at Telecom Paris Tech, France. He is doing a research in network optimization, resource allocation and communication networks.

Makhlouf Hadji: He completed his MS degree from Paris Dauphine University, France. He got his Ph.D. in computer science from Institute Mines Telecom, France. He was a researcher at Telecom SudParis for 3 years. Now he is a senior researcher at SystemX, Saclay, France. His main area of research is network optimization, resource allocation, mathematical programming in cloud computing.

Explain why this genre of public writing is the best format for translating the information in your scholarly article for a general, non-expert reader.

I chose this genre because it will interest the practitioners of a computer science field. These type of articles are informative and talk about problems, solutions and future projects. Usually people subscribe to journals and newspapers that are related to their field of study. When conducting a research and I want to learn about a topic, I would choose journal articles because they are written by professionals in their field and peer reviewed by others to provide correct information.

Describe two major challenges you see in translating your scholarly article into the genre of public writing you chose.

First challenge would be a conducting a research related to the edge computing, since it is a new technology and new findings are not yet confirmed. So it is hard to find articles that talk about the topic and ones that are available out of Mason library, they are not credible. The second challenge will be to put these into a simple wording so that the people who are new to Information technology can easily understand it. Because of the terminology and length of these papers, it is impossible to provide information on a professional level.
