RAW MATERIALS SELF-ASSESSMENT 2
1. Introduction
Raw materials self-assessment serves to help me explore, discover, and put together
sufficient information about what defines the person that I am. The assessment has helped
highlight my strengths and potential strengths’, as well as exposed my weaknesses. It has also
made me appreciate my core values and personality type. A deeper search into what these
aspects reveal about me not only serves to give me direction on how to maximize my
strengths to make the best out of life but also sufficiently advises me on what I need to do to
become a better person. I also have a better understanding of how I relate with others and
how I should improve my inter and intrapersonal skills.
To arrive at what defines me, I took several online tests, including the Richardstep test
for my strengths and potential strengths, and the Big Five test for my personality type. I also
took tests for my weaknesses and core values. I also held discourses with my family, friends,
workmates, and spiritual leaders to further understand who I am and how they conceive my
person to be.
Besides studying, I work part-time in order to raise my fees. I look forward to being
fully and meaningfully employed after my studies. Carrying out the raw materials self-
assessment is invaluable to the development of my personality in relation to my and the
employing company’s work ethic.
2 Raw Materials
There are various online tools for conducting raw materials assessment. They include
the Richardstep test, the Big Five test, and others. I undertook the Richardstep test for the
Strengths assessment. The Richardstep Strengths and Weaknesses Aptitude Test (RSWAT) is
a tool designed to help individuals have a better understanding of themselves by
understanding who they are and what they could become. From the test, I discovered that my
most outstanding strength is that I am a visionary, rated at 100%. Other strengths at 100% are
excellent communication skills, grounded and robust faith, and innovative. My fifth strength
is excellent problem-solving skills at 94%. Following in the hierarchy is that I am strategic
thinker, self-motivated, resourceful, purposeful, have integrity, and I am curious, a leader,
and determined, all at 94%. My potential strengths are risk-taking, team player, and
ambitious at 88%, 81%, and 63%, respectively. My greatest weakness is pessimism.
Discourses with family, friends, co-workers, and supervisors exposed my strengths as
reliable, apt, knowledgeable, tactful, empathetic, and skillful. They described my weaknesses
as brutally honest, temperamental, and perfectionist. Their observations were congruent with
the online findings.
I did the Big Five test to discover my personality type. This is a five-factor model
comprehensive personality assessment tool that puts human personalities into five broad
categories. The five categories are openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeability,
and neuroticism. Of these five personality types, I am dominantly conscientious at 98% and
openness at 96%. The test revealed that I am emotionally unstable and introverted.
Discourses with family, friends, co-workers, and supervisors classified me as imposing,
disciplined, intolerant of laziness and mediocrity, and candid. They also accused me of being
arrogant, conceited, and a cynic. In some way, there are similarities between what was
observed and the online findings.
3Findings
3.1 Strengths
RAW MATERIALS SELF-ASSESSMENT 3
My most outstanding strength is that I am a visionary. I always seek to share my vision
of the future with other people and value other people’s visions of the future too. I have
charisma and take a personal interest in others. In the work environment, I share my
perspectives on the company’s news and projects without reserve. I am an avid information
seeker, synthesize news, and give them a futuristic perspective. In fact, I always find myself
part of planning committees as well as monitoring and evaluation committees. My opinion
always counts; my supervisor asks for members of the organization to seek my input on
major projects. I look to help others rise above their fears of the present and future by
injecting hope about possibilities that lie beyond the road not taken. My organizational skills
are excellent. I follow up with tasks until the objectives are achieved. I take intelligent risks
for the sake of the company and family. I make plans for the future systematically with
clearly spelled out strategies that will make me realize those plans. At home, meetings are
unlikely to take place until I am present. I am the vision giver and key implementing person.
Above all, many people seek my advice when they want to take risks in private, professional
and business endeavors.
I am an excellent communicator in writing, speaking, and the use of non-verbal cues. I
am explicit when I am passing information about an issue and leave nothing to the
imagination. My thoughts are organized and logical. I am vivid and inject humor even in
grave circumstances. I have taken classes in communication, read widely, and watch news,
documentaries, and movies. On numerous occasions, I am the master of ceremony at events. I
represent the company I work for at significant events, and usually, I am entrusted with the
task of reporting about the company. I have served as a mediator between antagonistic parties
at work, at home, and in social places. I am a keen listener and exhibit excellent listening
skills. I sustain eye contact, nod in agreement, interject appropriately, and use body language
that encourages my conversation partners. I empathize and sympathize appropriately. I am a
confidant to many people. I also help others hone their communication skills. I convene and
participate in workshops, paid and pro-bono, on communication skills. My mastery of
content, tone, and voice projection gives me confidence and inspire confidence in others
when they are listening to me.
I have compelling faith. My passion for what I do is driven by a personal belief in my
capabilities, but averse to compromised ethics. I would refuse to participate in an activity that
contradicts my core values. I have faith in others and deliberately learn about them as I allow
them to learn about me. I allot more value to a higher level of service, such as benevolence
more than I do value money and make this known to all around me. While not everyone
agrees with me on this factor, I demand that it be respected. I also do not judge those whose
primary motivation for what they do is money.
Innovation is another hallmark that defines me. I actively look for opportunities where
my ideas are received, valued, and are likely to be adopted. I source ideas from other people
on various issues in order to stimulate my own thinking. In any challenging situation, I
purpose to be a solution provider and not a spectator. My approach to problem-solving is
divergent, not fixed on one possibility but considering all the possible solutions to a
challenge. My stamina enables me to carry through with grueling tasks. I continuously
consider ideas that add value to the company I work for and share them out with my co-
workers and supervisors. My diction aptly captures the essence of my thoughts. I particularly
enjoy punchy ideas. Before I make a decision, I ensure that everything fits together. I have an
inherent curiosity that is insatiable. Even when I have encountered a situation before, I
approach it as though I were encountering it for the first time. Above all, I respect other
people’s innovations.
RAW MATERIALS SELF-ASSESSMENT 4
I am good at solving problems. I employ the best problem-solving strategies, such as
teamwork, appropriate communication, and analysis. I am keen on details though sometimes
I go overboard. People count on my reasoning ability. I use accurate and credible data when
solving problems. I do not tolerate inaccurate data or accounts of events. My fidelity to
details, in some cases, makes me miss out on deadlines.
In addition to the five main strengths, there are many other strong points to my person.
I boast of a high self-drive. I have high self-esteem and an attitude of excellence. Failure does
not put me off; I treat it as a learning opportunity as I believe in lifelong learning. I rarely
suffer burn out. To keep myself driven, I meditate a lot and pay attention to my strengths and
weaknesses. In addition to my self-drive is my resourcefulness. For me, it is a mind-set,
especially since I am also visionary and need to get things done. I enjoy breaking barriers to
what is or is not possible, pushing myself to do what others believe is impossible. My self-
assurance is high, but I also treat people as a resource and value their inputs. My sense of
integrity is high. I take responsibility for my actions. I abhor excuses and blame-shifting. I
cherish honesty and almost always choose the right of the good. Sometimes the right choices
are painful, but the pain is more tolerable than the guilt that accompanies what seems a good
decision but weighs on my core values. Other people’s needs supersede my own. I do no
easily judge people. Even when it looks like they are on the wrong, I give the benefit of the
doubt. First appearances do not drive me to make conclusions. I analyze the reason behind
the exhibited behavior.
I am also curious and determined. I am always up investigating something that has
caught my attention. This makes me very knowledgeable. I read books, keep up to speed with
new technologies, and I am an avid researcher. I am not afraid of asking questions, even
when others seem bothered. I am highly creative and have the ability to multi-task. My
curiosity is the greatest beneficiary of my determination. I take the initiative and push
through with it. I am persistent, assertive, and would not hesitate to be bossy if I must in
order to things done. I am proactive and resilient.
Talking to my family members, co-workers, and supervisors confirmed a lot about my
online findings. My mother reminisced about how I had many plans when I was a child. She
said I often made a statement like ‘so many children are dying of hunger, what can we do to
alleviate their suffering.’ It does not surprise her therefore that today I am a member of a
number of charity organizations and still harbor the vision of running one myself. My
siblings depend on me a lot when it comes to decision making. My younger brother, though
interested in engineering, has often asked me about what I think about his career preference,
and believes I have the knowhow to make the best career choice for him. My father thinks my
faith in myself is to a fault. I have accomplished things that he openly says he never believed
I could pull through with. For example, I picked up employment soon after my twelfth grade
and received an award for the most innovative employee at the end of my first year at work,
even though I had to toggle between college and work half of the time. My friends say I am
easy to be around. They call me a go-getter, one for whom failure is not an option. They
marvel at my ability to withstand pressure. No matter the size of the task I am committed to, I
somehow manage and still look refreshed. There are times when I multi-task without
whining, so they say. I have provided a shoulder for many of them to lean on. They believe in
my reliability and confidentiality.
My co-workers think I am the most suited person to represent the company during
events. They admire my communication skills. I write reports, or at least I am consulted for
the company. When tasks are assigned, co-workers want to be in my team. They appreciate
my leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. Often, my immediate supervisor
RAW MATERIALS SELF-ASSESSMENT 5
delegates supervisory duties to me. She says I send positive vibes and provide solutions to
complex situations. She also appreciates my intra and interpersonal skills.
3.2 Potential Strengths
While I have a range of strengths, the online self-assessment revealed areas of my
character that border on strengths but need to be worked on in order for them to be strengths.
They are risk-taking at 88%, ambition at 81%, and teamwork at 63%.
The Richardstep test revealed optimism as my overarching weakness at 56%. It also
detailed what can be done in order to make it a strength. One of them is to look for
opportunities that can make me close to people in order to limit the time when I am alone. I
can also utilize my humor to excite people. I should also understand that being positive does
not necessarily mean that I will be in a cheerful mood. It is possible to be positive but still be
blue. I need to develop a higher tolerance for cynics or avoid them altogether. If I work on
these aspects, then I can turn my degree of optimism into a strength.
While I do take some risks in my personal, social, and work life, I have the tendency to
abate when the well-being of others is under threat, even when the conceived threat is only
minor. Perhaps this is attributed to my integrity. As a result, I have given up on some perfect
ideas because their outcomes meant individual suffering for some people. Another factor that
makes risk-taking a near-strength is that I do take risks, but again I am too cautious. In order
not to affect or hurt many people, I may pull through with a risk, but with a number of
modifications along the way in order to accommodate as many people as possible. In
addition, being visionary makes me one who is full of ideas. However, there are times when I
have given the ideas but left them to others to implement, only partly participating in the
implementation programs. If I scale down on my sensitivity, then risk-taking will definitely
be a strong point for me.
With regard to ambition, I am one person who looks to high achievements, but I do let
that desire get to me. Perhaps because I do not seek victory to be the top winner but rather to
accomplish a goal. Unlike ambitious people who do not tell on their goals, I tell on them. But
this disclosure can be used to build positive ambition as I believe alone I can go far, but
together we can go very far. It is only this aspect that stops ambition from becoming a strong
point. I share many other characteristics with ambitious people, such as open-mindedness,
determination, and curiosity.
I have great inter and intrapersonal skills. But I also have a tendency to aloneness. This
reduces my team working. While I believe in other people’s contributions to a task, I am
likely to carry out a task on my own if I can accomplish it without co-workers. Learning to
enjoy other people’s company can make me a great team player.
3.3 Faults and Bad Habits
One of my bad habits is that I can get overbearing when I feel tasks are not being well
done. I can get very bossy. I am not the know-it-all kind of person. But I get upset when
instructions are not followed. Since I am a perfectionist, I expect everyone around me to be a
perfectionist. When tasks I not done as I want, I will follow through with the task myself. In
addition, I overwork. Friends and family have complained that I spend too much time
working to the extent that I have little or no time for them. There are times when I stay late
into the night working that I have to take some pills to keep me through the day. I believe this
is a bad habit.
Another bad habit I have stems from my introverted nature. I almost turn down every
other invitation to a social event. When co-workers and friends want me to join them in fun
RAW MATERIALS SELF-ASSESSMENT 6
moments, I look for an excuse not to attend. I prefer alone time. I find partying draining as I
have to talk with people a lot about what I consider trivialities. To be honest, I find the time
thus spend wasted. I am likely to make such an observation verbally, which I noticed is
offensive to my patrons for such events.
While it appears like a strength, being too tolerant is actually a fault. I do not like
offending people. I give the benefit of the doubt to a fault. This makes people take advantage
of me. They always expect me to be understanding and to provide them with a second
chance, even when I have been grievously offended. When assigned a task by my supervisor
together with co-workers, they tend to find a reason not to do the task, and they always
implore me to cover for them. They apologize and promise to behave better in a subsequent
task, but they end up taking advantage of my integrity and dedication. Family members have
also taken advantage of this flaw. They use my things without necessarily seeking my
consent first. They call me ‘an angel,’ but there are times when these actions really upset me.
They also delegate challenging negotiation assignments to me, which sometimes put me on a
collision course with those involved. I end up being the bad guy.
3.4 What Motivates Me
I enjoy the character of self-drive. I took an online test on what motivates me. What
stood out most is that I am very spiritually drawn. I believe in divine guidance and
intervention. I spend a lot of time in introspect, and I am very conscious of who I am. I like to
meditate and spend sufficient time in prayer. When I work, I do it as an act of worship to
God, hence my little interest in the tangible rewards of money or accolades. Serving
humanity, for me, is a higher call, and I look for opportunities for this service. I am wise
enough to discern when to question my own and others’ actions and how to advise myself
and others. When I give a piece of advice or an opinion, others listen to me. Though I love
the world when it is at peace, I am bothered when there are social injustices, and I am likely
to participate in events that promote social justice. The downside of these attributes is that
often I care about others so much that I forget about myself.
Many times, I do what I do unconsciously. Friends, family, and co-workers observed
that when I commit to a course, especially one that is for the good of humanity, I go to
unimaginable lengths. I become obsessed with the task until I find a solution and will only
stop when those I intended to serve have been served. At my workplace, I work in the sales
department, and I always surpass my targets. I go out on errands with workmates if they need
my help. At home, I enjoy contributing to the payment of utilities and my siblings’ education.
I also engage in a lot of charity work.
3.5 My Personality
To get to know more about my personality, I took the Big Five Personality Test. The
five-factor model outlines five personality types. Although no one type can wholesomely
define an individual, there are dominant traits that underpin an individual’s dominant
personality type. In my case, I am dominantly conscientious, rated at 98%. A conscientious
person is loyal, diligent, and efficient. Indeed, I am the kind of person who does not backstab.
I support family, friends, and colleagues at work without reserve. I am known to be extremely
hardworking. When I undertake my duties, I am careful to make sure that I am efficient and
effective. My policy is to work without supervision, and this has been confirmed by my
supervisor’s confidential reports. I am meticulous to a fault, but do not judge others for being
disorderly though I point out that disorderliness bothers me. Because of my inclination to
conformity, I am a workaholic and a perfectionist, highly goal oriented. One of the rules of
the thumb is not to antagonize. I value my peace and peace with others.
RAW MATERIALS SELF-ASSESSMENT 7
However, being conscientious has meant certain implications for me. I am not stressed
by work, but when I do not achieve my goals, I tend to slip into depression. This is
heightened by the fact that I like being alone. I also tend to take the blame for failed tasks
even when I am not to blame.my co-workers complain that my perfectionism often lands
them in trouble with the supervisors as I have become one of the company’s benchmarks. At
the family level and in my interaction with friends, I tend to put undue pressure on them to
behave in a particular way, which in some cases causes disagreements. I fuss about a
disorganized kitchen, living room, and bedroom. When it is my turn to do the chores, I spell
out many rules which take away the fun in being in a clean environment. My younger brother
always accuses me of being a wet blanket.
My co-dominant personality type is openness. I am never fixed on a particular way in
which things should be. I consider diverse viewpoints when confronted by a situation, which
makes me accept numerous possibilities to an issue. I do not resist change. Instead, I believe
in the adage that change is as good as rest. I am driven by curiosity. I do not make
conclusions about and issue or a person at face value. In the case of people, I dig into their
past, and I hold conversations with them to get to know them better and understand their
viewpoints. I judge the rationale behind the action rather than the action. I, therefore, do not
label people as bad, but the things that they do. This makes me able to love people
unconditionally.
On the downside, my open-mindedness has on a number of occasions led to my being
duped. Curious about why this happened, I did research and discovered that open-minded
people could be gullible. I also learned that my high change appetite could spell doom for an
organization if I am in a senior leadership position. I can easily keep shifting goalposts in
terms of plans and policies. Being open-minded, I accepted this fact, and I am now working
on it, capitalizing on my curious and conscientious nature. I have also gotten in trouble with
people who think I am too nosy. My little sister thinks I micro-manage her. I always ask a lot
of questions about her friends, especially boyfriends. I probe a lot, sometimes getting
intrusive. I think I also do not like this bit of my open-mindedness.
The weakest of my personality scores is that I am neurotic, but at 34%, which means it
is not severe. I worry a lot about incomplete tasks, what is going on with my friends and
family, what others think about me when I feel a weakness has been exposed; just about
everything. I do not easily get stressed. But when I do, I find it difficult to deal with it despite
my problem-solving abilities. It is as if, at this point, I have failed to find a solution to a
problem. I often slip into depression until I figure it out. No wonder I have ulcers and
migraines most of the time. My ulcers are particularly bad.
3.6 Core Values
There are values I hold dear to me. They give me satisfaction and fulfillment. Even
when circumstances seem complicated, these values do not change because they define me. If
I am put between a rock and a wall and I compromise any of them, I feel frustrated. The
internal conflict that ensues plagues me with guilt for a long time and leads me to do things
that can compensate for the compromise, even when I know spilled milk cannot be collected.
I did an online test for personal values, and the results gave them from the strongest, in
the order of spiritual life, forgiveness, social justice, obedience, self-respect, success,
intelligence, mature love, cleanliness, and courage.
4. Insights
Taking the raw materials self-assessment has revealed invaluable insights into who I
am and what I am capable of.
RAW MATERIALS SELF-ASSESSMENT 8
Many of the strengths revealed by the online tests and feedback from family, friends,
and colleagues at work are congruent with my conception of self. There were, however,
revelations that came to me as shockers. For instance, I have always thought I am
emotionally very stable. The personality test disqualified this belief by revealing that my
emotional stability was at a low of 34%. It got me thinking. Then I thought about the many
times I silently throw tantrums before I undertake tasks that I do not enjoy, or which
colleagues ask me to do for them. I remembered the many times I lock myself up in my room
when I am angry or upset about something. I remembered the many times I feel sad when my
goals are not met and how moody I get, although I try to hide it from those around me. My
depressive slips. The many times I scolded my younger siblings for doing the wrong things.
Gentle, but a scolding all the same.
I got to agree that, indeed, I am not very stable emotionally. I also always thought that I
am a very optimistic person. The test results placed my optimism at 56%, making it the least
of my strength. I, however, still feel that I am an optimistic person. I am not easily
discouraged. I encourage others when their circumstances are grim, and they count on me for
support. I firmly believe that as long as I am alive, anything is possible. Another shocker was
that I am not a team player. To be honest, this description of me always features in my
resumes when I write my profile. I work well with people. I value other people’s
contributions to tasks. But on reflection, I realize that I work well in a team but not with the
team. I do not consciously seek the support of others, and we do teamwork by default. If a
task separates from them, I most likely focus on my part of the assignment without caring
much about how others do their share of the task. I definitely need to step up my teamwork
skills.
My potential strengths were accurately observed both by the online tests and friends,
family, and colleagues. I love risks, but often chicken out if the risk is likely to hurt other
people. That makes me very conscious of the risks I take. I also consciously refuse to be
driven by ambition. I like working as an act of worship. I have always felt ambition can lead
to the development of negative traits such as greed and self-centeredness. It can also create
sibling rivalry and destroy the family fabric. My friends think I am moderate, not desiring too
much, but again afraid of deficiency. My workmates think I am not the kind of person who
would offer blind loyalty for kickbacks or use malice to discredit a colleague in order for me
to rise through the ranks at my workplace. These are observations that make me very proud
of the person I am.
I have more faults than I thought I do. I have always felt that I am very accommodating,
but the test results and conversations with family, friends, and colleagues revealed things
about me that I had never thought of. Of particular interest is my intolerance for laziness and
opinions that are not supported by facts. I learned that I simply dismiss such opinions. I also
learned that I am indifferent to people I perceive as too casual with life. To my shock, I was
told behind my humility is a degree of arrogance as I am aware of my strengths and the
admiration of people towards me. I am still coming to terms with these revelations.
Without a doubt, I am a very spiritual person, and my allegiance to my faith controls all
that I do. I do not serve to get recognition or to be rewarded. Not that I do not like these do,
but they are a non-issue to me. When I give service, I feel it is an obligation I have towards
humanity that is divinely anchored.
My spirituality closely relates to my core-values. The test I carried out stroked
spirituality with other values. I chose spirituality over others. Perhaps that is why other values
that I hold so dear, such as self- respect and cleanliness came a distant fifth and ninth. I
believe my spirituality bears a lot on my self-respect. I am one person who believes self-
RAW MATERIALS SELF-ASSESSMENT 9
respect is the highest form of worship and the best legacy a man can leave behind. Other
values that are so dear to me and which were not reflected in the tests are honesty and
fidelity. Among my friends, family, and colleagues, my degree of honesty is so high that if I
lied, it is unlikely that the lie will be noticed. Forever, my word is my bond.
My personality type was accurately observed to a large extend. I have always known
that my conscientiousness borders on the extreme, and I have never been apologetic about it.
I believe it is one of the reasons why my life is so easy. I do not fight at home, with friends or
at my workplace because my conscience has checks that are so strong that it does not allow
me to do things I will regret. When I make mistakes, I make a point of making it up to all that
I offend. Disorganization can literally stop my functionality. My sense of duty is impeccable.
I do not work ad hoc; I plan my work, whether at home or work. My open-mindedness gives
me limitless possibilities for situations that I encounter. It is unlikely that I will get stuck in a
situation. That is why, when I do, I am likely to slip into depression because my degree of
frustration will be very high. The tests also observed that I am agreeable. Family, friends, and
colleagues describe me as warm, kind, and trustworthy, which resonates with agreeability. I
am an approachable person, especially because it is not in my grain to judge people, but
rather what they do. I was, however, disturbed by the observation that I have a degree of
neuroticism. Both the tests and discourses revealed this. My family members complained that
my presence at home puts them on edge as I am very particular about everything. My
colleagues complained that my desire to get things done perfectly put undue pressure on
them. I also realized that I worry a lot about things that should be non-issues, such as how my
siblings should arrange their bedrooms.
5 Summary and Synthesis
In conclusion, the raw materials self-assessment has been a very enriching experience. I
am now aware of my strengths and weaknesses more than ever. I will work on perfecting my
strength while consciously minimizing my weaknesses. I hope to keep up my values and
uphold service to humanity as my mantra in all that I do.
A synthesis of my results shows that I have more strong points than I do weak ones.
Out of the twenty strengths, four of them had a perfect score of 100%. Ten of them recorded
94%, which is excellent. My personality scores had my most definite personality identity at
98%, followed by 96%, which are excellent scores. My open-mindedness complements my
intelligence and curiosity but can easily compromise my sense of purpose. I need to strike a
balance such that though I am open to new ideas, they do not shift my focus from my goals.
If I lack purpose, my visionary trait is also threatened since I can easily be swayed by other
people’s aspirations. Fortunately, most of my strengths serve to enhance my core-values, just
as my personality type does. This makes me feel I am a balanced person, and my behavior is
consistent. Perhaps the attributes for open-mindedness I display are the positive ones and not
the negative ones.
In view of this self-assessment, I am persuaded that my career prospects are boosted as
I am now very clear about the career path to pursue. I realize I may not be best suited for
managerial roles. I also realize that I am good at organization and mobilization. I get things
done, so my customers would not be disappointed.
In my relationships, I have learned that there are things I take for granted, yet they
weigh heavily on how others relate to me. Friends and family have complained that I have
almost no time for social activities. I plan to consciously budget for quality time with them
when I will totally shut out work activities. I will also tone down on my fussiness and let
RAW MATERIALS SELF-ASSESSMENT 10
people be. I believe these actions will shift my relationship with them from a transactional
one to a filial one.
The revelation of my neurotic tendencies is my most significant insight. Moving
forward, I will not fear to drive my actions. My health is my greatest asset. The thought that
extreme anxiety, worry, and fear can send me to a mental hospital is the most sobering. I will
learn to take things easy and appreciate that to be imperfect is what is human. I will learn to
reframe failures into springboards for success as I walk into the future. I now know that when
I make myself a better person, the benefit does not end with me but fosters the development
of all people around me; family, friends, and co-workers. This is my purpose.
