Robert Ryman and Abstraction

Topic: The impact of Robert Ryman’s Abstract Painting in the Understanding of Humanity

Introduction and thesis statement

Abstraction is an approach to an artwork where the artist does not create a conventional

piece of art where the idea of what the artist is producing is not obvious and visible to the normal

audience. When people take a careful look at the piece of artwork carefully, they may have

different ideas of what the artist may have been trying to create and present. The primary idea

behind abstract art is that individuals seek to address things, which are unknown and existing

only subconsciously. Most importantly, abstract artists were keen on exploring deep aspects of

humanity into their artworks, including culture, economy, politics, even a family. Thus, while

individuals may not easily understand the meaning of a piece of abstract artwork, there is always

a silent message among their works that the artists are presenting, or they would like to describe

an aspect. Robert Ryman was one of the contemporary abstract artists to have come out of the

United States. At the very beginning, he delved into music, and at some point in his life, he

changed into the painting world.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of Ryman’s abstract painting on

humanity. This paper holds that Ryman’s abstract art helped in the understanding of humanity by

exploring and critiquing aspects of human life that are often hidden to the naked eye.

Body

Paragraph two

The impact of the art in understanding human thought processes. Ryman’s painting may be

used to understand how the human thought processes operate. This concept will be understood

by looking at Ryman’s “Untitled (Orange Painting) (1955 and 1959)”. It is notable that when

Ryman was creating this artwork, he did not have a specific idea in his mind but what resulted

may be used to understand the way human thought processes look like.

This is VERY vague you need to be more specific to give the paper a bit more direction.

make sure this definition of abstraction is not just your opinion or conjecture but a accurate and researched definition backed up by expert opinion.

The definition of abstraction can be in the introduction but should be built into after you introduce your topic of Ryman and give a bit more context of who he is and what your paper is exploring about him.

This sentence seems too vague- you need to give it more context, time period, why are you mentioning music... it just feels too brief and not enough context. If this is your thesis statement it needs more clarity. strength and direction.

Do not refer to your paper, this takes away scholarly value, simply state it: "The impact of Ryman's.... is .... on huanity"

I think you need to clarify what you mean by humanity - it is a big word and it seem to be a focus of your paper to you need to tell us the reader what is meant here.

Demonstrating the process of creating; using Ryman’s “Untitled (1960)” painting, it would

be possible to demonstrate Ryman’s idea that for humans to create anything out of nature there is

a process that must be followed.

Paragraph four

The impact of environment on human actions; using Ryman’s art indicated above, ‘Untitled

(Background Music) (1962)’, it is possible to understand the manner in which different aspects

of human environment affect human actions. In this art, it is evident that Ryman’s art was

influenced by his background in music.
