Professor Victoria L Curran Final Paper Assignment— Race/Ethnicity in Context

This final assignment will give you the opportunity to synthesize and expand upon what you have learned this semester, as well as add to your knowledge of how race and/or ethnicity operates in a specific cultural context. Examples of cultural contexts include: housing, transportation, media, education, healthcare, business, etc.

Objective: Write a research paper in which you discuss a topic related to this class that you wish to explore more fully or has not been discussed. For example, in this class, we discuss the role of race in education, housing, transportation and more, but perhaps you would like to explore one of these topics further and possibly from a different angle. Alternatively, you might want to explore a topic not discussed such as the role of race in business or healthcare. You will, of course, need to narrow your focus since “race in the media,” for example, is quite broad. Perhaps you could narrow it all the way down to analyzing the way race is portrayed in a particular movie, or have a slightly broader focus such as exploring racial stereotypes in cartoons.

Please submit a brief proposal via Canvas by May 12 that indicates the following: your choice of cultural context (e.g., media, business, etc.), your research question, a working thesis statement that seeks to answer the research question, and a list of sources you plan to use.

Paper Guidelines: 1. Your introduction should have a clear thesis statement that answers your research question. 2. Provide a clear organizational structure (i.e., a clear introduction, body, and conclusion) 3. The body of the paper should have 3 to 5 main points that support your thesis statement. 4. Support each main point with strong reasoning, clear examples 5. You should cite a minimum of 3 credible, objective sources within your paper that are also

accurately documented on a works cited page or bibliography. 6. Be sure to submit a professional paper. Your paper should be no more than 5 typewritten

pages in length. Make sure to double-space, use 1” margins on all 4 sides, and use a legible 12-point font (e.g., Calibri, Arial). Be sure to proofread for accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
