Project 2: Improving Outdoor Air Quality

Introduction

Poor air quality affects human health and the environment. Air pollution is one of the major causes

of various diseases. Air quality can be improved by identifying the source of air pollution and

developing an engineering solution.

Project scope

An Environmental Authority (EA, client, represented by your professor) has approached your

interdisciplinary engineering design team to design a sustainable approach that reduces the level

of air pollution in Kuwait. The EA is interested in technical solutions for specific sources of air

pollution.

The tasks

1- Research of relevant standards and codes as applied in Kuwait (individual task).

2- Research of major sources of air pollution in Kuwait and select one source to improve

(group task).

3- Develop a conceptual design of a solution to the selected problem (Sketch, individual task)

4- Decide and justify the design of your solution (group task).

5- Estimate the cost of implementing your solution (group task).

6- Create technical drawings in order to communicate your solution (group task).

7- Apply professional project management techniques, incl. meeting agendas, meeting

minutes, design decision matrix, WBS of solution, Responsibility Matrix for project 2, Risk

Assessment for project 2, Gantt Chart for project 2, Cost estimation of implementation of

solution (group task).

8- Summarize your solution in a Technical Report, including an assembly instruction (i.e.

sequence of necessary tasks, required material, used equipment) (group task).

Learning Outcomes

Project Events and Submission

The client requires two submissions based on the deadlines according to course outline:

1. Propose selected solution to the client in week 7 (c.f. task #4 above)

2. PowerPoint presentation of the design solution (Assessment 3) online.

2. A technical project report detailing the design of your solution including the used project

management documents as appendices (part of Assessment 4).
