The purpose of the proposed qualitative phenomenological study will be to explore the lived experiences of younger women who earned an undergraduate degree in computer science but have chosen careers outside the IT profession.

Data collection plan:

I plan to interview 10-12 women who either currently work for me at ComputerSoft Inc, or who can be identified from the local university’s computer science alumni directory. I know the dean and can get access to this directory. I will contact the women by phone or email and ask them to participate in the study. Once they agree, I will then interview each woman either at my office or at a local Starbucks for 30-40 minutes about their career decisions. Interviews will be audio recorded. As a reward for participating, each woman will receive a $25 Starbucks card. To minimize potential gender discomfort and potential bias, my female secretary will attend the interviews and take notes.

Data analysis plan:

All data will be transcribed from the audio recordings into MS Word. Once all interviews have been finalized, data files will be analyzed for themes and patterns by ResearchInc, a 3rd party vendor specializing in dissertation research. I will review their analysis result for quality and ensure themes align with existing literature and the research purpose and questions. Analyzed data will then be used as input for conclusions and recommendations.
