Why is there a prevalence of HIV/AIDS infection among persons who are alcohol and/or drug dependent? Why do you believe there is high correlation?
Alcohol use has been shown to impact HIV infection with increased transmission risk and possible disease progression b blunting one’s self-monitoring behavior, this increasing the likelihood of having multiple or casual sex partners and unprotected sex. A history of heavy alcohol use has been correlated with a lifetime tendency toward high-risk sexual behaviors, including multiple sex partners and unprotected intercourse. Studies have consistently demonstrated that people who strongly believe that alcohol enhances sexual arousal and performance are more likely to practice risky sexual behaviors after drinking. Alcohol is the most commonly used substance among HIV-infected people in the USA. The activities that aid in transmission of HIV/AIDS may interact directly and or indirectly with alcohol use and or abuse. In general, alcohol consumption leads to a higher risk of HIV-infection. I believe there is a high correlation because people with alcohol abuse disorders are more likely that the general population to engage in behaviors hat place them at risk for contracting HIV and similarly, people with HIV are more likely to abuse alcohol at some time during their lives.

Re: Topic 8 DQ 1
Hello Professor and Class,
I believe there is a prevalence of HIV/AIDs infections among persons who are alcohol or drug dependent because of how the drugs affect the persons that use rational thinking, which leads to high risk behaviors. Of course we are aware that HIV/AIDS is bloodblorne disease that is only contracted during certain behaviors. High risk behaviors that drug dependent individuals may involve themselves in may include shared needles/works that are related to their drug of choice. Other high risk activities may be high risk sexual involvement that involves unprotected sex, and high risk sexual activity that include things such as prostitution. With the substance abuse population continuously increasing and the increasing epidemic includes a drug that is mainly done through the use of needles, the numbers of people being diagnosed with infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS have increased. Drinking alcohol and ingesting, smoking, or inhaling drugs are also associated with increased risk for HIV(cdc.gov). The correlation is so high amongst substance users and HIV/AIDS because of how a person that abuses drugs inhibitons are affected by the substance they choose to abuse, to include opioids, alcohol, methamphetamines, cocaine, and other inhalants.

Re: Topic 8 DQ 2: What is the relationship between gambling addiction and substance use disorders?
Excellent information, Rosa. Often, I have clients that present for mental health and substance use evaluations that include a gambling addiction. Now, while the addiction associated with gambling often may begin during young adulthood, this addiction, or compulsive behavior may also begin during adulthood. How does one know it is becoming an addiction? What questions are asked during as assessment? Well, as with many of the clients I assess, most people who develop a gambling disorder gradually increase both the amount and the frequency of their wagers when betting and this is consistent amongst all age cohorts.
