Researching the DCCCD Online Library Databases
Log onto dcccd.edu, then click on “Services & Resources” as demonstrated below:
At the bottom of the page, you will see “Library” in a white box to the right of the page. Click on “Library” as demonstrated below:
Under “Find”, please click on “Articles, Journals (Databases)”:
Under “A”, click on “Academic Search Complete”:
Enter your full name and student I.D. in the provided boxes as indicated below:
Before entering your research item, under the category “Limit your results”, please be sure to check “Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals” for those instructors that are requiring it as demonstrated below:
Under the category “Published Date”, please indicate the limitations of your research. For example, your teacher may only want the last 5 years of researched information:
It is now time for you to type your research question in the box as indicated below:
Example: Typing in “Student success courses in college” brought up the following research articles. As shown below, click on the article title to read the content:
After clicking on the article title, you will be brought to the following page to review the “Abstract” and see if the article is relevant to your research question:
If you believe this article is relevant, you should then click on “HTML Full Text” to the left of the page to read the full contents of the article. Note: Some articles will be in “PDF Full Text”:
You are now able to read the full contents of the article. To the right under “Tools”, you will see options to e-mail the article to yourself, print the article, and also cite this source easily by clicking on “Cite”:
After clicking “Cite”, scroll down using the bar under “Citation Format” to indicate MLA format (or any other format your teacher is requiring) to be used for this article :
Assignment Requirements:
Select a research topic and create a research question
Use the online database Academic Search Complete to find two sources - (one source must be peer reviewed)
Evaluate both sources using the Information Literacy Document (one document for each source)
The document to complete for this assignment should be provided by your instructor or attached in e-campus. Screen shots are shown on the next few slides with regard to these documents.
Find TWO articles using the databases and complete TWO Information Literacy Assignment Document (one for each article):
How do you know the date of the article and if it is current? Look at the “Source” below. You can see that it is January 2013:
How do you know if the article is relevant? A good place to start is by reading the “Abstract”.
How do you know the author is credible? Look at who they are affiliated with. Also, Google their name and see what they have accomplished in the field that they are discussing in the article. Are they an expert in this field, etc.?
How do you know if the article is accurate? Looking at the source will reveal accuracy of the material.
What is the author’s purpose for writing this article? Is it to persuade the audience, inform the audience, etc. Read the article to see what the author’s purpose is.
