As this is first and foremost a music class, it is critical to be able to understand music through listening. Listening journals provide a framework for organizing what you hear, analyzing the sonic properties, and connecting the musical sounds and text to what you might already know or have heard. Each week, you will write a descriptive and reflective listening journal entry for ONE of the week’s assigned listening examples. Details for writing the journals are forthcoming.
This template must be used. Journal graded as 50% for #1, and 50% for #2.

1) Reflection Section: EXAMPLE The song “Knee Deep” by the Zac Brown Band gives of a beachy, country theme. This song makes me want to go lie on a beach and forget about all my worries. This song talks about how he wants to go to the beach to wash his blues away because of his most recent break up with a girl. The lyrics are catchy and fun to sing too. The song continuously has the string guitar in the background, with occasional whistling. The overall rhythm sounds like a tropical song that you could hear on a beach or island. The beginning of the song says, “Sunshine gonna wash my blues away, had sweet love but I lost it”, explaining that he is going to spend time on the beach to make him feel better and forget his troubles. The song also says, “never been so happy”, which I can relate to. When I am at the beach, it is my happy place and makes me so incredibly happy. I believe this song’s message to the listener is that it is… Things to think about to include: discussing what the lyrics mean, what parts make the song memorable, unusual, what the message might be, how the song makes you feel, how the song might affect other people or situations in the world.

Basically, you want to outline each part of the song and notice what changes in instrumentation, lyrically, and anything else. PLEASE NOTE YOU MUST DESCRIBE WHAT IS HAPPENING IN EACH SECTION FOR FULL POINTS. (Just putting chorus, verse, etc with no description will result in a loss of points.) |
