Community Colleges: Students’ choice

We all have that one friend who we know that’s been living his whole life post-college, working in debt, after going to college and utilizing student loans. After all the hard work in and out of school studying and staying up late night to make sure you knew the material, everyone told us, “after getting that college degree, you will be making the big bucks!”. Now looking at it the only person making big bucks are the loan institutions! Most students and families now a days are leaning towards saving a couple of bucks by seeking community colleges now over traditional 4 year universities and/or private colleges. Costs plays a big a role in choosing the right college.

One reason that steers students and families in the direction of a community college is tuition, how much it is going to cost to attend. Community colleges nationwide have remarkably lower tuition costs than private universities. There are many factors that play into role for the reason of tuition prices to be lower at community colleges than universities. Campus size is one of those reasons that help the costs stay low. Many community college campus’ are small and compact making classes easily accessible. Small campus size, less buildings, less resources all equal up to costs of attendance to stay low. School resources and technology also play a role in reflecting the price of tuition. Community colleges are less equipped with new and advanced technology and resources that the majority of universities are equipped with. With the more simple and basic equipment that is provided at a community college, the price is reflected. A big chunk of the tuition price comes from student housing.

College isn’t always only about going to class and getting education. When life goes on and we are 30 years down the road, people like to think back on life and reminisce about all the good times. And there’s nothing better than making great memories with friends and classmates on campus. Student life is sought out after in the years of college and meeting new people and making new friends is college central. There is no better way to do so than to live on campus while attending. But if you are looking into attending a community college, you just might out of luck, or could I say lucky? Community colleges do not offer student housing. All students are commuters meaning they live at home and commute to campus every day. Campus’ not having student housing helps keep the cost of tuition down.

Class sizes are another reason that guide students in the direction of a community college. Typically, in universities lecture halls and classes could hold up to hundreds of students to one professor. With class sizes so large students are missing out on the more one to one and more personal interactions with the professor. At community colleges, class sizes are generally smaller in amount of students which allows for more focus and understanding between the student and professor.

With smaller class sizes, lower tuition cost and student housing, people are choosing community colleges to save some money. Community colleges are becoming more financially appealing to students and family’s.
