When the ACA was signed by President Obama, it amplified a bill already signed by President Bush, that all health records be electronically connected so any doctor has all of anyone’s history. This also produced capitalism at it’s finest with over 200 different Electronic Health Record software packages in the market. Not everyone is on board with this, especially doctors. This project would be to set up a system, where not only charting is computerized; but also billing insurance companies and Medicare.
In building this system, you have to have the personnel to set up the system, from wiring to installing computers, scanners, and printers. Risk Management has to be utilized related to placement of monitors for HIPAA. Communication and a tight schedule is essential for ensuring going online on time. Security concerns regarding where your back up serer is going to ensure secure data backup and transfer. Software packages must be picked out for the EHR. All of this has to be achieved at a reasonable cost to the client.
The project has multiple anticipated scopes which are aligned with all the earlier mentioned concepts and concepts of the project life cycle. First and foremost, the project will provide an analysis of the business environment or the industry analysis before implementing the new hospital-wide EHR systems in the healthcare facility. Therefore, the project will describe the various technical factors which entail the human skills and competencies, organizational structure, organizational culture, technical infrastructure, financial requirements and availability along with coordination. Besides, the paper will also discuss the various challenges which might affect the implementation of the electronic health records with the organization including the complexity of medical data, issues of data entry, security, and confidentiality of information as well as the lack of awareness of the advantages of integrating the information technology within an organization. All these information will be integrated into the designing and planning phase. However, in the implementation and evaluation stage, the project will highlight some of the notable activities of the project manager in this stage including some of the manager’s role in the implementation of the EHR system within the organization. Last but not least, the project will also entail the monitoring and evaluation stage where there will be descriptions of the strategies of monitoring and evaluating the success and progress of the project.
It is anticipated that the successful activation of EHR entails a multi-disciplinary method of preparing the new information technology system, ensuring privacy along with the security compliance, designing the practice workflows, training of the care team managers who will adopt the new process. It is also projected that a thoughtful implementation of EHR will assist the practice to adapt more effortlessly to the new system which will also be helpful to patients, physicians, and other personnel.
