This assignment focuses on your analysis of the case written by Thomas H Davenport and John Glaser, Just-In-Time Delivery Comes to Knowledge Management The case integrates all the disciplines of the CIM degree into a real-world situation where there is a clear and significant problem and a creative and cutting-edge solution that is already implemented.  As you have learned in this program, the CIM degree provides graduates with a unique perspective quite different than you would receive in a typical MBA or Communication program. This case was chosen specifically because it highlights the integration of these CIM domains: communications, organizational management, technology, and knowledge management. The case presents a typical type of problem for a modern business and because of the different areas that you studied throughout this program, you have a unique perspective and are more qualified than the typical MBA to tackle problems of this type.  Bring that insight into your discussion of the case.

In a typical case study, students are presented with a perplexing business situation and then are required to analyze the data presented and suggest solutions.  You are going to approach this case differently.  This case presents both the problem and the chosen solution.  We are told that Partners Healthcare was faced with a very serious problem and that they undertook an ambitious knowledge management project in order to solve it.

Your task for this assignment is to reverse engineer the case (i.e., break it into its component parts) and think about the decision making and problems solving that led to this solution.  The solution is the result of the integration of several domains.  The Partners Healthcare problem was not just a business problem, but it was also a communications problem and a management of information and technology problem.  The overall project scope had to incorporate and integrate all of these domains.  On your journey through the CIM program you have studied all of these domains.  Your task for the main portion of this assignment consists of three parts.

1. Identify the business problem(s), the chosen solution, and the obstacles that had to be overcome to accomplish the solution. Be sure to include details of any new system(s) that were necessary to implement the solution. Essentially tell us what was wrong, how they knew it, and what they had to do solve it.

2. Identify the communications problem(s), the chosen solution, and the obstacles that had to be overcome to accomplish the solution that was implemented.  Discuss the kinds of communications that were necessary to both understand the problem and to implement a solution.  What kinds of messages had to be conveyed?  Who is the audience for all of this – or are there multiple audiences and messages?  How might Bolman and Deal’s four frames theory be of help in understanding this problem and the messaging the participants undertook?

3. Identify the management of information and technology problem(s), the chosen solution, and the obstacles that had to be overcome to accomplish the solution.  What went into creating this solution and what problems were encountered along the way and in the solutions?  Essentially tell us what they had to do.

Your final paper should consist of these sections: an introduction and at least three key sections:

·  Introduction: Describe the overall problem and why it is a problem, who the key players are in the situation, how they knew the problem existed, and the intended solution.

· Three Component Parts of the Problem

· The business problem section.

· The communication problem section.

· The management of information problem section.

· The paper should be formatted according to APA including a references page.

· The paper should be professionally written, well crafted, grammatically correct, and spelling error free.
