Student thinking
I believe that all of the food gathering techniques has its positives and negatives. They also are all unique in that what works for one area may not work for a different area and vice versa. The hunting and gathering technique is the only technique that many societies can do without. The means of getting food that way is very limited and the people would often have to move around, at times too far, in order to find what they need. The horticulture technique will work great for small-scale cultures that have small families to feed. Pastoralism is a great technique when a culture can not rely on their soil and weather in order to produce a sufficient supply. Intensive and industrial agriculture technique relies on machines to do a great majority of the work. This allows very large quantities to be made at once, so large cultures can have plenty in order to feed everyone. However, cultures that do not have the means of getting that equipment won't be successful. If I had to choose, I would pick the intensive or industrial agriculture technique. For my advanced technological society, we have the means of getting this equipment, and we are large with many mouths to feed.
My plan for activity 3 is to hopefully be able to expand on my research for my indigenous tribe in activity 1 and do option 1, if I can. I would like to further explore the Melanesians and their way of life. If that is not allowed, I would do option 2, which is interviewing a professional. I am starting the nursing program this upcoming spring semester and have someone in mind that I could talk to about that. So those would be my first and second picks for activity 3. I feel that I would have a head start and a general idea on my next steps if I could dig deeper into the Melanesian culture though, and for the first time, truly learn and completely understand a culture other than my own.
What has been my favorite part of the class so far would be activity 1. It took me a while to get started because I was a bit confused on how to begin. It was truly a challenge for me to partake in. I believe that's what made it the best part because once I finally completed the project, that feeling of satisfaction was all worth it. I was able to tackle that assignment and learn a lot from it. I was forced to seek multiple sources in order to find all of the information that I needed. Putting it all together was a great experience to do, while somewhat practicing the method of field studying.
Question 2
Discussion Forum 7
An important part of this course is learning how we are increasingly connected to people from all around the world. We always have been but the globalization of the world economy continues to increase our connections to people in most countries of the world. If you take some time to explore the tags on all your clothes, you will quickly learn that people in many parts of the world, made the clothes you wear. What does it mean that we wear clothes made by people in China? Guatemala? Pakistan? Hondoras? Mexico? I hope this activity will help you think about some of these connections and what they mean to you.
Slavery Footprint
Take some time and complete the survey on the following website:
http://slaveryfootprint.org/survey/#where_do_you_live
After completing the survey, please post how many slaves are working for you based on this survey. Be sure to write a paragaph and explain how this relates to the concept of globalization (you might want to review the definition in your textbook found in the last chapter).
As always, reply to classmates.

Wow, thirty-five slaves working for my wife and me. I can only imagine that many of the processes of globalization contribute to the increase of slaves. Countries, where production costs are lower, have the advantage to get the manufacturing business. Which is one of the advantages of globalization, being able to produce a product at the lowest cost so it can be sold cheaper, and profit margins can still be abundant. Unfortunately, many times the production costs are lower due employing slaves because employment laws aren’t enforced. Another concern is that globalization had created the movement of a lot of goods transferred from one place to another. This highway of products is also used to transfer human slaves throughout the world. (Brewer, 48)
