Developing Others as Leaders
2.3 Assignment. Reflection Paper
While you have spent time this week considering how to identify leaders in your discussion posts, you can go deeper to explore your thoughts and reflect on your motivations about developing others in this assignment.
Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:
· Consider approachability as a coach and mentor
· Demonstrate understanding of how approach, priorities, and leadership style impact leadership development
Background Information
“The growth and development of people is the highest calling of leadership” (Maxwell, 1995, p. 107).
This paper not only will enable you to demonstrate your learning from this first workshop week of this course, but also will build upon your learning from the LDR-320 Followership course.
Instructions
1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
2. Read Chapters 4–7 of your text, Developing the Leaders Around You.
3. Review the articles “ Developing emerging leaders(new tab) ” and “ Trust in me!(new tab) ” and watch the videos from the Workshop Two Overview(new tab) (these are the same resources used for this week’s workshop discussion forum).
4. Write a two-page reflection paper (500-600 words double-spaced in a Word document), addressing the following reflection prompts:
a. As a leader (or other roles you might fill), how much emphasis do you put on developing others?
b. Do your priorities reflect a leader who values the development of others?
c. What fears do you have about developing others? For example, when a leader develops others, does that minimize the leader’s value? Does developing others make the leader expendable? Do you have fears about your own leadership effectiveness or capacity to develop others?
d. What is your leadership style?
e. As a leader, to what extent are you approachable by others looking to be developed? Are there any things you can do to increase your approachability?
f. As you reflect on your own cultural perspective of leadership, how might you approach others with different cultural perspectives for the purpose of identifying and developing others as leaders?
5. Inasmuch as this is a reflection paper, first-person voice is acceptable. No additional sources are required, as well.
