2.3 Assignment. Creating a Strategic Plan, Part 2 - Drucker's Five Questions

Getting Started

In 2007, the electronics retail giant, Circuit City, cut 3,400 employees using a formula that resulted in eliminating their top performers. As a result, Circuit City experienced a 70% drop in its stock price within 8 months. Within two years, they closed the doors of their last store after some 60 years in business. This is yet another example of foolish decisions that ignored the valuable insights that are available through strategic thinking and planning.

Drucker's Five Questions were designed to help leaders consider organizational and personal self-discovery, by giving them a means to assess how to  be…in other words, how to develop quality, character, mindset, values and courage. The questions, once answered, should lead to action. In thoughtfully and reflectively asking each of these questions, you can expect to focus on why you do what you are doing as well as how you might do it better (Drucker et al, 2008).

Instructions

1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.

2. Review the resources assigned for the other Workshop Two activities.

3. View the YouTube video: Start With Why by Simon Sinek.

4. This assignment is the second of several you will complete over the coming six weeks, each of which will contribute to the building of a strategic plan, your Course Project due in Week 6. In #1.6 above, an introduction to this process is provided.

5. For the organization you chose during Workshop #1, use the knowledge you gained in viewing and reading the assigned materials this week to respond to Drucker’s Five Questions.

6. Your written assignment must include the short description of your chosen organization from Assignment #1.5, an introduction paragraph or two that provides an overview of Drucker’s Five Questions, and then at least one paragraph of response for each of Drucker’s Five Questions. Include a closing paragraph that provides a summary and rationale for why you answered the Five Questions as you did. This assignment should be between 2 and 4 pages, not including the title and reference pages.

7. A minimum of 3 sources other than assigned materials are required to help better inform your responses to the Five Questions.

8. All papers are to be written and formatted in accordance with the APA Guidelines (7th ed.)
