2.3 Assignment. Charting a Leadership System in Your Organization

Getting Started

This assignment is designed to provide you with the opportunity to view your organization via a fresh perspective outside of the traditional organizational chart. Begin by thinking about how you might create some sort of illustration that would represent how your organization might look in light of our discussion of leadership as a system. For example, you might create a chart or graphic that illustrates how you perceive your workplace. To be more specific, instead of a traditional organizational chart, create a graphical representation of some kind that incorporates the various elements of the leadership system (leader + follower + organization + goals).

You have the freedom to be highly creative in how you design this. The goal is not graphic design perfection, but rather to create a visual that stimulates your thinking about how your organization would look if each element of the leadership system were considered in relationship with one another. Use any type of software you prefer (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc.).  Your illustration must be accompanied by a half-page to one-page explanation that addresses your rationale for how you constructed your visual. Your short, written reflection also should discuss how your graphic impacts your perspective of your organization’s structure. What insights might this new perspective lend when contrasted with a traditional organizational chart?

Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:

· Assess the fundamental relationship between effective followers and effective leaders necessary for effective organizations.

· Assess the shifting role of follower and leader in an organization.
