IMPORTANT NOTE: The article and the model will be discussed during residency; thus, it will be important for you to complete the reading ahead of the dialogue so you can more fully engage with others. STEP SIX: Identify prospective industries

Identify Five Industries of Interest for the Applied Doctoral Project

· Review the NAICS Industry Codes Report (downloadable in Resources).

· Identify a few industries of interest (within the same sector or across sectors)—those that might be good sources for locating your ADP partner organization.

The IBIS World NAICS report lists the NAICS codes in a brief report. The link below, however, will take you to the Census website to view or download the full 2017 NAICS manual. Although a few years old, it appears to be the most recent publication available on the Census website. The report is quite lengthy at over 900 pages but it is easily accessed and may help you to gain greater clarity about your selection of one or more NAICS codes. The report provides descriptions accompanying the numbers and includes sub-codes that further extend the numbering into niche industry areas which may be of interest to you.

As you reflect on the various industries that exist, keep in mind the ultimate aim for this milestone which is to select one industry to research throughout your doctoral program.

STEP SEVEN: Skillbuilding—industry research & ocls

So, are you ready to start researching some industries? Terrific! Let’s first begin this skill-building research step by reviewing how to conduct a Boolean search—it will help you to be so much more efficient and effective when searching OCLS databases or conducting other internet searches.

Boolean Search

Boolean Search uses a combination of keywords and the three main Boolean operators (AND, OR and NOT) to organize and sift through your searches. It produces more accurate and relevant results, allowing you to navigate through appropriate candidates, while disregarding the unrelated.

The first important thing to appreciate about Boolean is that there are only five elements of syntax to understand. These are:

By applying these appropriately, along with the keywords you wish to consider, you can create a huge range of search operations. There is no limit to how often you can use any of these elements in a search, so you can create very specific search strings, which will save you a lot of time in filtering the results. Conducting Industry Research

Begin to research current peer-reviewed journal articles, industry trade journals, and other resources in the OCLS databases using the industry names and the five industry codes you previously identified as part of the Boolean search terms. What is important for the Industry Selection milestone and other doctoral research is to select resources based on quality of content, relevancy, and recency whenever possible, as applicable.

NOTE The resources you select for the Industry Selection milestone may continue to have value and use as cited works in each of your ADP milestones for the next 18–36 months. Thus, it is important to choose well.

As you pull resources from the OCLS databases, look for those that specifically tie to your selected NAICS codes. See the display of NAIC/Industry Codes section in the example article content detail in Figure 2.

S The Literary Executive

As you begin to locate resources tied to your industry selections, consider how they are being reviewed by the various types of resources: scholarly journal articles, white papers, conference presentations, newspaper articles and more. Also, consider taking your knowledge-building cues from one of the most revered names in the business world: Warren Buffet.

WARREN BUFFETT, CEO- Berkshire Hathaway

Warren Buffett credits many of his great money decisions to his voracious reading habit. He says he starts every morning by poring over several newspapers and estimates he spends as much as 80 percent of his day reading.

The CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, when asked once about the key to success, pointed to a stack of books and said, ‘Read 500 pages like this every day.’

That’s how knowledge works. It builds up, like compound interest. All of you can do it, but I guarantee not many of you will do it. (Ward, 2016, paras. 1–2)

“Turns out, science shows that a Buffett-inspired reading habit could benefit you in several ways as it can help make you rich, smarter, emotionally intelligent, and mentally sharp” (Ward, 2018, para. 4).
