Diversity, You, and Society
Diversity (Final Project Milestone One)
Introduction
The LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Tran-sexual and Queer) community suffers perennial discrimination in their normal and workplace life. The principal reason that describes the unwavering segregation to workers belonging to this community is because their sexuality is not the norm. Despite the constitutional affirmation that the LGBTQ community is legally recognized, some people have a negative tendency towards them. Many companies have scandals about sexuality discrimination that originates from the management or peer-to-peer cases. It is a critical diversity issue that organizations must openly address. An optimal work environment is devoid of discrimination on sexuality, religion, ethnicity, and other non-work variables because every employee is employed for their professional qualifications. The modern workplace has, therefore, become revolutionized as employees belonging to the LGBTQ community seek equality in treatment. In normal lives, the LGBTQ community undergoes constant ridicule, disapproval, and stigmatization even from their family members. The rationale is that the constitution stipulates that the LGBTQ community is legally recognized, and a section of the society and organizations perpetrate covert or open discrimination towards them.
Lens Connections
Lens of History
The LGBTQ community is believed to have existed in every society in history because all the documented cultures provided evidence that same-sex love occurred. It has been a taboo for non-heterosexual people to come out and identify as LGBTQ because of the traditional values of many communities (Morris, 2019). Homophobia started from historical times because the peculiarity of these sexual orientations was deemed ungodly (Morris, 2019). In effect, the world has treated the LGBTQ in a discriminatory manner before different governments such as the federal government constitutional recognized the community (Morris, 2019). Even though, the discrimination is rampant in all the social institutions in the society from healthcare facilities, educational institutions to religious houses.
Lens of Humanities
The LGBTQ community lacked an environment to come out as a non –heterosexual community for many years. In history, homosexuality and other sexuality preferences that were not heterosexual were highly condemned. Other critics termed them as satanic people that went against God’s will in the respective religions that believe in God (Evans et al., 2019). The condemnation that came from religious principles is the origin of the discrimination that the LGBTQ community faces. In the normal lives, these people are segregated because they are seen as agents of evil (Evans et al., 2019). It is unfair because the hatred has become systematic and thereby affecting them in major ways. For instance, healthcare accessibility has become a problem for some people belonging to the LGBTQ because the physicians and hospital staff treat them with disdain. Patients that contracted Sexually Transmitted Diseases and they are gay, or bisexual can be highly victimized as compared to other patients with the same diseases but identify as heterosexual (Evans et al., 2019).
Lens of Natural Sciences
Natural sciences describe the LGBTQ community as people that are born with different preferences due to their biological factors. There us contention surrounding the research on the proof for biological factors that contribute to homosexuality (Swartz et al., 2019). However, a modicum of the studies’ results affirms that hereditary factors prove that some people inherit some genes that can trigger same-sex romantic feelings. The society must, therefore, promote this reality and accept the people belonging to this community as their equal human beings (Swartz et al., 2019). They are human and their sexual orientation does not undermine or belittle their value as human beings.
Lens of Social Science
Social sciences are the commonest theoretical explanations towards understanding the origin of non-heterosexual relations. Human beings are social because it is in their intrinsic nature. In many instances, research has shown that the environment that a person grows up in is a principal contributory factor of influence into the LGBTQ community (Gross, 2015). The friends that an individual keeps are also another important factor that can contribute to the sexuality choice. The place of work that a person works can also contribute to their choice of sexuality (Gross, 2015).
