2.2 Discussion. Leader Development - Identifying Potential Leaders

Getting Started

271503245

When it comes to leadership development, we all have different motivations. Some people desire development to be more productive or efficient at their job. Others may want development for the opportunities, promotions, or rewards it brings. Still others may have a drive for life-long learning. Just as it is important to understand the motivations as to why someone wants to be developed, it is critical to understand the motivations behind the desire to develop others within the organization. As you go through this exercise, consider how motivations and beliefs (right and wrong) about leadership impact the development of others.

Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:

· Discuss different ways to identify potential leaders

· Explain how trust and motivations impact leader development

· Background Information

· Your preparation for this discussion forum begins by reading the articles “Developing emerging leaders(new tab) ” and “Trust in me!(new tab) ” as well as reviewing the first six chapters of Maxwell’s (2005) textbook.

· Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.

· Review the information in Getting Started and Background Information sections.

· In your initial discussion post (250-300 words), based upon your reading and review, discuss different ways to identify potential leaders. According to Maxwell (2005), a leader’s primary responsibility is identifying potential leaders. How might one go about identifying potential leaders in your organization? What qualities do you look for when developing leaders? What motivations might someone have to be developed (as a person or as a leader)? How do misguided beliefs about leadership impact leader development? That is, if someone has the wrong ideas about who a leader is or what a leader does, how could that impact the process and effect of leader development?
