2.2 Discussion. Crucial Conversations - Ch. 6-13

Getting Started

For this discussion forum, read Chapters 6-13 in  Crucial Conversations. In these chapters you will go beyond the first section, “What to do Before You Open Your Mouth”, and into the sections “How to Open Your Mouth,” and “How to Finish.” By the end of the book, you will have been exposed to a wide number of new tools for your leadership toolkit.

Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:

· Apply skills that will improve communication in situations where emotions run high.

Instructions

1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.

2. Read  Crucial Conversations, chapters 6-13.

3. Read the article  Listening Is an Overlooked Leadership Tool (new tab) .

4. Develop an initial post of 300-400 words responding to one or more question prompts by the end of Day 4 of the workshop.  

5. Discussion Prompts:

a. Think back on a Crucial Conversation you have had that went wrong. Think about the steps: Learn to Look, Make it Safe, STATE My Path, Explore Others’ Paths, and Retake Your Pen. Which of these steps went the most wrong? Why?

b. If you could redo the conversation, how would you use these steps to help the conversation reach a more positive end?

6. Give two additional 100-to 200-word responses to other students’ posts due by the end of Day 7 of the workshop. Any questions posed by the instructor to the student must also be answered.
