Education Narrative or Informational Text Strategy
Overview
In this course, you learn about the various aspects of reading and language arts as related to exceptional children, including formal and informal assessments of students. This narrative or informal text strategy assignment will help you synthesize your learning and demonstrate your knowledge, application, and analysis of the narrative or informal text strategy.
Learner Outcomes
Understand and apply research-based strategies to teach or assess advanced literacy skills appropriate to the needs of learners with exceptionalities.
Gather, interpret, and communicate background and assessment information from a variety of sources to make educational decisions and design individualized instruction.
Design developmentally appropriate lessons to include research-based and differentiated instruction and technology.
Understand and adhere to legal and ethical guidelines for assessing, identifying, and monitoring diverse learners with exceptionalities.
Exhibit an awareness and demonstrate appropriate oral and written communication to foster beneficial relationships with various stakeholders.
Identify, compare, and categorize traits and characteristics of learners with exceptionalities.
Select, analyze, justify, and implement use of formal and informal assessments based on models, theories, and philosophies to effectively convey results.
Directions:
The candidate will demonstrate understanding using the skills required to improve reading
comprehension of narrative or informational text. First, gather background information to
build a student profile by interviewing the parent and student. Next, the textbook provides
various strategies to improve comprehension skills. The task is to develop a comprehension
strategy that can help the candidate's targeted student who could benefit from the instruction.

activity; complete the Backward Design Lesson Plan; develop and implement the comprehension
strategy based on the textbook; take a picture(s) of the materials after implementing the strategy;
and write a two-page reflection. Upload your completed template to Canvas by the due date.
1. Gather background information to build the student's profile by using the attached Interview forms.
A. Interview Parent-Guardian
B. Interview Student for Primary Students or Student Interview for Middle and
High School Students (choose a form for the appropriate grade level).
C. Embed both completed Interviews documents into the provided Template.
2. Using one of the assessment strategies outlined in the textbook, select an effective teaching strategy to meet the needs of your student targeting comprehension of narrative or
informational text.Target the needs of your identified exceptional (struggling)student.
Choose Narrative or Informal Text:
*For narrative text, you may select one of the following strategies:
• building background knowledge,
• making predictions about text,
• reading a story to students,
• directed reading-thinking activity,
• monitoring responses to reading,
• making mental images,
• constructing content-free questions,
• using discussion cards, or
• developing an understanding of story structure and nurturing personal response.
*For informational text, you may select one of the following strategies:
• using read-aloud with grade-level text,
• content-free questions,
• text coding,
• discussion cards,
• topic-detail-main idea strategy,
• think-aloud strategy,
• question-answer relationships,

• main-idea grid, or
• idea-mapping.
3. Using the Backward Design Lesson Plan provided in the template, design a plan to implement your strategy.
4. Implement the strategy with your identified exceptional (struggling) student.
5. Using the Reflection section of the template, write at least a two-page reflection on the implementation of the narrative or informational text strategy assessment. Fully discuss the topics outlined in the template. Be sure to include the effect on student learning.
6. Upload your completed template to Canvas (100 Points Possible)
