Carbon Monoxide as an Air Pollutant-PART 1

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a gas characterized by no smell, color, or taste. The normally accepted percentage of CO is 0.001 percent. However, higher levels of these fumes are consistently observed in the air. The major cause of CO is the insufficient combustion of carbon that has deposit fuels (Vallero, 2014). This is especially experienced in urbanized areas as most people living in these areas drive vehicles that require fuel (Ernst & Zibrak, 1998).

Tobacco smoking is another origin of the CO gas. An individual’s body releases CO when hemoglobin has degenerated. In normal bodies this accounts for only three percent of CO but in heavy smokers, the percentage of CO in their bodies can go up to 15 percent. Poorly installed and maintained heating systems in buildings can also lead to the production of CO (Mehta, Das & Singh, 2007).

Using charcoal, kerosene or wood to prepare meals or keep warm acts as yet another cause of CO. In many poor areas, burning fuels is the only source of heat or ability to cook food. Women who do the most cooking are exposed to levels of ozone and carbon monoxide and may have a higher chance of giving birth to babies with serious heart defects, according to researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). (Renner, 2002). According to the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) (40 CFR part 50) Carbon Monoxide is a primary standard and people are not to exceed 9 ppm in eight hours or 35 ppm in one hour more than once per year ("NAAQS Table | US EPA," 2017).

Air Pollution Research Paper Milestone Two: Annotated Bibliography

In Unit VII, you will write a research paper on one air pollutant. The paper will require a detailed discussion of the sources of the pollutant, the factors affecting its fate and transport, its health effects, its ecological effects, engineering control measures, and regulatory control measures.

For this milestone, locate one resource for each aspect of the pollutant you chose in milestone one (Carbon Monoxide see attached paper) the sources of the pollutant, the factors affecting its fate and transport, its health effects, its ecological effects, engineering control measures, and regulatory control measures.

You will need to find a minimum of eight sources, at least four of which must be from academic journals, and two or more may be from credible sources from the Internet, such as the EPA website. Write a one-paragraph summary of each source, and provide at least one sentence that describes how the source will be useful in your final research paper. Your annotated bibliography should be at least three pages in length, not counting the title page. Include in-text and full citations in APA format.

Air Pollution Research Paper

In this assignment, you will pull all the information you have gathered from your work in milestones one and two in order to write a research paper.

In your introduction, include a thesis that provides your overall opinion on the danger presented by your chosen pollutant and the adequacy of current engineering controls and regulatory controls. In the conclusion, revisit this thesis and sum up how the information you presented supports your opinion. Based on your research, provide suggestions for what should be done about your pollutant. Your research paper should include a detailed discussion of the following:

· sources of the pollutant, 

· factors affecting its fate and transport,

· health effects,

· ecological effects,

· engineering control measures, and

· regulatory control measures.

Your research paper should be at least four pages in length and written using APA style guidelines.

You must use at least four peer-reviewed or academic (e.g., trade journals, etc.) sources from the CSU Online Library and three other sources. Additional, credible sources from the Internet (e.g., EPA website) may also be used. The title and reference pages do not count towards the minimum page requirement. Need eight references.
