Here is the prompt for Paper #2 (Film Review).doc. Much of this is repeated from last week's instructions.
Using the techniques you worked on for Paper #1, you will be asked this week to do another outline-- this time, however, it will on film analysis (or division/classification). Reminder that this is the second of 5 papers you will be writing in this class (3 on outside topics & 2 on the novel); this is your second major writing project, and it will be worth a maximum of 15 points. Do not exceed more than 2 pages.
Simply put, you are to prove the worthiness of any 1 of the 20 films listed below:
Citizen Kane The Godfather The Godfather Part II 8 1/2
Lawrence of Arabia Dr. Strangelove Bicycle Thieves Raging Bull
Vertigo Rashomon Rules of the Game The Seven
Samurai
Taxi Driver 2001:A Space Odyssey Apocalypse Now Tokyo Story
Midnight Cowboy The Last Temptation of Christ The Seventh Seal The Sacrifice
You are to choose one of the following films and ultimately prove the worth of the film by analyzing some of the deeper aspects of it. In other words, you are to analyze exactly how the themes, the character development, the symbols, and the setting all upon deeper analysis prove how this film "feeds the mind."
The prompt will be very specific as to how to create the approved structure of this first draft. Simply put, you will have two introduction paragraphs--the first one is validating Bill Swanson's thesis that films "feed the mind," and you must incorporate two quotes from Swanson's essay. The second one is a brief 12-14 sentence plot summary--don't state everything that happens in the film but do share enough of the plot to show 1) that you understand the film, and 2) you can write an effective summary of a complicated work of art.
Then you are to have 3-5 body paragraphs showing exactly how the film feeds the mind. Please remember that these 3-5 film elements must absolutely prove how this is a film and not belong in the category of movies. Research must be absolutely be done in order to prove exactly HOW this film "feeds the mind."

The order of importance here is crucial for success in this paper--your first body paragraph/film element will be a good example, but the second body paragraph/film element will be a better example, and the final body paragraph/film element will be both the longest and the best example to prove your definition/thesis.
This is your 1st Draft, and it will undergo revisions this week from 2 of your peers. After the Midterm Exam, it will be rewritten as a 2nd Draft (which I will revise), and then, finally in about 2-3 weeks, a Final Draft will be turned in for a maximum amount of 15 points (see syllabus for grading scales).
Finally, your job here is to persuade your audience that your film "feeds the mind." Do not assume your reader will know what you mean nor automatically will agree with you. Show exactly HOW this film "feeds the mind." You have from Monday this week until Wednesday to turn in this assignment, and until Friday to review the papers of 2 of your peers in order to fully complete this assignment.
