Here is the prompt for Paper #1. (https://vcccd.instructure.com/api/v1/canvadoc_session? blob=%7B%22moderated_grading_whitelist%22:null,%22enable_annotations%22:null,%22enrollment_type%22:null,%22anonymous_instructor_annotations% Much of this is repeated information from last week.

Using the techniques you worked on in the creation of an outline on "Poverty" two weeks ago, you will be asked this week to do the same thing, except now it is the word Rebellious. Reminder that this is the first of 5 papers you will be writing in this class (3 on outside topics & 2 on the novel); ultimately, this first major writing project will be worth 10 points. Do not exceed more than 2 pages.

Simply put, you are to define the following word:

Rebellious (CRN #71363)

You are not allowed to use or quote from a dictionary definition. Create a 20-word definition from your knowledge of what you believe the word means-- you may review a dictionary for a better understanding of what the word means but you are not at all allowed to take a dictionary's definition and make it yours.

Then you are to research about 3 people: somebody who is alive today (present), somebody who is not alive (past), and somebody that you know personally (not a close, blood family member) who fit the definition of independence or rebellious that you created. These three individuals will make up the body paragraphs, and research must be done in order to prove exactly HOW and WHY that person fits your definition. What the person did is not as important as proving how and why!!

The order of importance here is crucial for success in this paper--your first body paragraph/person will be a good example, but the second body paragraph/person will be a better example, and the final body paragraph/person will be both the longest and the best example to prove your definition/thesis.

You cannot use anybody who is obvious, trendy, easy, or overwritten (e.g. Dr. King, Gandhi, Malcolm X. Rosa Parks, Colin Kaepernick, Greta Thunberg, Malala Yousafzai, any of the current or past U.S. presidents or Founding Fathers or Revolutionary War or Civil War heroes). You cannot write as well about any current popular athlete or rap star. I will let you know about the others you cannot write about when we meet in a few days.

This is your 1st Draft, and it will undergo revisions this week from 2 of your peers. Next week, it will be rewritten as a 2nd Draft (which I will revise), and then, finally in about 2-3 weeks, a Final Draft will be turned in for a maximum amount of 10 points (see syllabus for grading scales).

Finally, your job here is to persuade your audience that your definition of Rebellious is a very valid one. Do not assume your reader will know what you mean. Show WHY and HOW this person fits your definition. You have from Monday this week until Wednesday to turn in this assignment, and until Friday to review the papers of 2 of your peers in order to fully complete this assignment.

**Here are some videos on how to eventually create a university-level essay--this is information for two weeks from now, but if you would like to get a head start on practicing how to write an effective essay, please take advantage of this time you have presently.
