Persuasive Speech

Topic: Tree planting

General Purpose: To persuade and motivate United States citizens to participate in the tree planting day

Specific Purpose: To increase the awareness people about the importance of tree planting

Thesis/Central Idea: Americans are not significantly participating in tree planning programs such as the tree planting day because of factors such as urbanization and limitations faced by tree planting programs and this can be solved by supporting tree planting programs by both governmental and nongovernmental agencies.

Organizational Pattern: Problem Solution

I. Introduction Write this out as a paragraph include sources

It is a worrying trend that the world’s population is not keen on planting trees which provide the perfect solution to the world’s increasingly warm temperatures because of greenhouse gas emissions. Nowak et al. (2014) discusses the health effects of trees and forest in the American context which helps to rationalize the need for tree planting. In addition, Pincetl (2010) provides a real world example of a tree planting program (MTLA) in Los Angeles including the benefits and challenges. Conniff (2018) addresses that more Americans are living in urban areas which translates to reducing tree coverage. It is important that Americans participate in tree planting because it promotes their quality of life and eliminates environmental pollution as well as empowering tree planting programs because increasing tree coverage is a public obligation. The main idea is to promote people’s awareness of benefits provided by tree planting and this paper addresses the causes of declining tree planting participation as well as the solution to encourage people to participate in tree planting.

II. Body

A. Americans are not fully participating in tree planting because of urbanization and lack of awareness

1. This is demonstrated as follows:

a. Evidence that shows the regional or local Extent of the problem)

At least 80 percent of Americans live in urban cities which translate to declining urban tree cover.

b. (Evidence in the form of Facts or Statistics)

According to the study by Urban Forestry & Urban Greening metropolitan areas have a net loss of 36 million trees nationwide annually (Conniff, 2018).

c. (Evidence in the form of Expert Testimony)

Pincelt (2010), quotes Alberti and Susskind (1996), that urban areas majorly contribute to regional and environmental problems in form of increasing population and human activities which leads to emissions and waste

2. Evidence below should demonstrate proof for this statement

a. (Evidence that provides a Description of Problem )

Tree planting especially in urban areas has declined because of challenges of implementing tree planting programs in terms of funding and awareness.

b. (Evidence that shows Signs, Symptoms, or Effects of Problem)

This has in turn led to significant reduction of tree coverage in urban areas through clearing of trees for development and declining participation of Americans in tree planting exercise.

c. (Evidence that is an Example, a Narrative, or Testimony)

For example, the American Forests organization offers incentives including a one-year membership and personalized certificate for dollars donated for tree planting. This indicates that people need to be motivated to plant trees.

3. (Bring this back to the audience with detail engaging local or audience relevant evidence Problem) Evidence below should demonstrate proof for this statement

a. (Facts/Statistics)

Nowak et al.(2014) reports that tree planting removed air pollution by 17.4 million tones with human health effects at the value of $ 6.8 billion.

b. (Example/Narrative)

The presence of trees in urban areas have been found to have substantially more benefits than in rural areas because trees filter polluted air and provide and a peaceful ambience.

(Transition into second Main Point)

B.Main Point (Present Solution that can solve the Problem )

1. (Description of Solution-How Solution Satisfies Need) If you are suggesting we give to an already existent org. explain how they meet the needs you covered earlier

There is need to mobilize funds for organizations committed to environmental conservation through tree planting

a.(Evidence that shows how your Solution addresses the regional or local Extent of the problem)

According to Pincetl (2010) Los Angeles which is the second largest city in America launched the Million Trees Los Angeles (MTLA) in 2007 to deal with environmental pollution and improve quality of life.

b. (Evidence that shows of Factual or Statistical basis for this solution satisfying the need)

The Center for Urban Forest Research (CUFR) reported that increase in tree coverage will have a value of $ 1 billion in aesthetics and $75-117 million in energy savings, $53-83 million in air quality, $5.1-8.3 million in carbon dioxide reductions and $ 97-153 million in storm water inception (Pincetl, 2010).

c. (Evidence in the form of Expert Testimony supporting how this solution will satisfy the need mentioned in the first main point)

Successful tree planting programs in many U.S cities requires a strong network of partners and agencies such as property owners, transportation departments and nonprofits among others.

2.(Describe How Solution can be implemented or how would the solution work?)

a. The government and non-governmental institutions should support tree planting programs in terms of funds and logistics to increase tree coverage in both urban and rural areas

b. Tree planting program agencies should organize nationwide workshops and conferences as well as ads to educate people on the importance of tree planting to encourage their voluntary participation.

c. Tree planting programs should be continuously monitored and reviewed on performance to ensure accountability and transparency in how funds and other resources are managed to promote tree planting and make the tree planting day a patriotic obligation.

(Transition into your Conclusion)

III. Conclusion: Write this out as a paragraph

In conclusion, tree planting involves the participation of the public because it is a significant event. However, tree planting has been declining among American citizens because millions are residing in urban areas where there is less tree coverage. In addition, tree planting programs are facing challenges in increasing public awareness on the benefits of trees and thus the critical need to plant trees. This paper has addressed the problems facing tree planting which are urbanization and lack of adequate support for the exercise as well as the solution of supporting tree planting programs. This helps to ensure that Americans and the world’s population participate in tree planting because it helps to promote quality of life and reduce environmental pollution. In retrospect, people can be persuaded and motivated to plant trees as well as be aware of benefits of trees by ensuring that tree planting programs are supported in their activities and campaigns.
