You are asked to write one individually researched review of one of two journal articles. Article 1: Detomasi-The Multinational corporation as a political actor OR Article 2: Block-Swimming Against the Current The Rise of a Hidden Developmental State in the United States *The articles are available for download from Canvas

Assessment Task 1

Purposes Your review of the article should show your reader that you:

• have a clear understanding of the key concepts and theories related to the article; • can identify and assess the strengths and weaknesses of the key arguments of the

article; • can identify and discuss the significance of the article in relation to the existing

literature (you should include at least three scholarly references to demonstrate you have attempted to draw links between your chosen article with other works in the field); and

• can present a clear and convincing argument using an effective academic writing style including consistent referencing and citation (using Harvard style)

The criteria against which the paper will be graded are:

• evidence of extensive reading and understanding of the article as seen in the critique of the theories;

• critical evaluation of the article’s significance to the existing literature; and • presentation which includes a clear writing style, good grammar and spelling and

appropriate referencing.

What is critical thinking?

• the discipline of being skeptical or questioning about statements, propositions information or norms (Mingers, 2000: 225)

• being thoughtful, asking questions, not simply accepting as true, everything your read/hear (Williams, 2015)

• Critique of ‘how we know what we know’

• Involves critical analysis of people’s arguments and propositions

• Implies coming to a reasoned judgment based on analyses of claims, evidence and assumptions

Assessment Task 2

For this assessment, your group is required to choose one industry from the below list: • telecommunications • pharmaceuticals • tourism • agri-business • energy

Your group may focus on your chosen industry (i) as a whole, (ii) a sub-sector of the industry or (iii) selecting one firm within the industry. Your group’s task is to conduct in-depth analysis of your case in any country/countries of your choice by focusing on one of following topics covered in this course.

• Neoliberalism and economic development • Global institutions and governance • Ethics and corporate social responsibility • Business, government and sustainable development • Global information economy and government policy • Future of work in the global context

• Groups will be formed in the first week’s tutorial. Your group will also nominate a group coordinator.

Assessment Task 2 Aalyse your case utilising C.A.S.E. method (C: Challenge, A: Analysis, S: Solution, and E: Execution).

This will involve: • Identifying and researching trends and challenges relevant to your chosen

topic for the selected industry (or sub-sector or the chosen firm in the industry);

• Analysing the identified issues and challenges, and their impact on business- government relation by applying relevant concepts and theoretical frameworks;

• Discussing alternatives and most viable solution for managers within the industry; and

• Recommending a feasible action plan, and predicting consequences and risk factors, if any.

Application of frameworks, theories and concepts of the course is compulsory for your analysis. • You should use at least five scholarly references and five non-scholarly references (the list

of references should be included in your written group report).

Assessment Task 2 1. Oral presentation • Before your presentation, submit powerpoint slides to your tutor • Deliver a group presentation of your case to the class (approx. 30 minutes) • Lead the discussions (approx. 15 minutes). Class discussion can be in the form of class

activities such as quiz, role play, Q&A etc.

2. Written report • Should be submitted on the day of your presentation via Canvas. • The written report should consist of

- the case study analysis (approximately 1,500 words) - the group reflection (approximately 500 words)

(i) what your group has learned through this assessment task; (ii) feasible and thoughtful ways to improve group work process and outcome in the

future; and (iii) why it is important for future business leaders to have understanding of your

group’s chosen course topic.

Key marking criteria for your group project are; • Quality of research • Understanding and application of key theories and course concepts • Quality of analysis • Organisation of presentation and report (structure, logical flow etc.) • Oral presentation style (clarity, creativity, management of class discussion

• Assignment type: Individual • Value: 50% • Link to CLOs: 1,2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 • Word limit: 2,500 words (excluding title page, executive summary and

references, 10% more or less is allowed) • Due date: 23:55 on Monday, 28 May Based on your studies of this course and academic research, you are asked to write an individual essay by choosing one of two questions. • At least ten quality scholarly references (two from the assigned reading and

eight additional references) must be used

Assessment criteria • Level of mastery of the subject matters • Overall quality of analysis, depth of reflection/ thinking in terms of the key

themes and issues raised in the question • Appropriate structure (logical sequence; transitions between parts; well-

developed paragraphs) • Quality, relevance and sufficiency of references (while relevant non-

academic sources are permitted, your essay should contain mainly scholarly articles)

• Format and presentation including clarity of expression and grammar, and correct format of in-text citations and bibliography.
