The Impact of Same-Sex Classrooms on the Overall Student Academic Performance in Lancaster High School, Texas
Introduction to the Research Topic
In the past few decades, debates over the essence of the increasing single-sex schools have attracted the attention of different stakeholders in the education sector. Various policies and theories have been developed regarding the impact of same-sex classrooms on educational performance (Thrupp, 2015). In 2011, Lancaster high school embraced a move try out single-sex classes for some students to improve their performance.
Lancaster high school is located to the northern part of Texas state. The school has an enrollment of about 1,200 students, with over 84% of the population being blacks (Katherine, 2011). The school’s vision is to “provide a safe and secure environment in which students can achieve, teachers can perform in all professional manner, and staff can perform all duties necessary to be excellent” (Katherine, 2011). The mission is to provide all students with an atmosphere where they can attain their full potential, and necessary skills to allow them to fit in the society.
Problem Statement
In April 2011, the school's principal- Roosevelt Nivens- recognized the continually declining performance of Lancaster school students. The school had turned out to be the worst in academic achievement in northern Texas (Katherine, 2011). Roosevelt took drastic changes to turn the school into a pure girls' school. The move was met with support and opposition alike. Supporters argue that boys and girls are entirely different and thus should be taught differently. Opposers say that the programs promote negative gender stereotypes. The purpose of this study is to establish the correlation between academic performance and mixed-sex classrooms.
Other Issues that can be Solved Using the Data from this study
The information from the above research can be used to analyze social developments among students in mixed schools. For example, one will be able to determine the effect of school relationships on academic performance. Other issues, such as the prevalence of student delinquency in either school situations, will also be established from the study.
Research Methodology
The primary technique of data collection will be the use of pre-prepared questionnaires. Three different samples of interview questions will be developed. The first questionnaire tool will be for the students, then another for the teachers and the last one for the parents. Random and stratified techniques of sample selection will be used to get a representative population from the students. The three pieces of interview tools will serve to increase the credibility of the information gathered during the study. A thorough analysis of the official school's student progressive records will also help to augment the data from the questionnaire tools.
The Foreseeable Feasible and Realistic Changes
In the interests of the institution's vision and mission statements, the most likely change will be the separation of the genders in the school. The school aspires to prepare students that can compete well in the society. With the declining performance in academia, the school will resort to any practical means that revive the performance of the students.
