For this assignment, we will continue our investigation into cases of misrepresentation, this time analyzing how the culture of mascots and/or team logos in High School, Collegiate and Professional sports misrepresent Indian Nations and their identities. With this assignment you will create a powerpoint; consider your project not as an aid for a presentation but like a poster presentation of your ideas and research.

Over 7% on Turnitin will result in an automatic zero for this assignment. 

Requirements:

-Select 3 mascots and/or team logos (2 examples that are problematic and 1 example in which a team changed its mascot/logo, see below) misrepresenting Native American cultures and identities. As you choose your examples, reflect on how readily consumed and mass-produced these mascots and team logos are in our contemporary material culture. This alone means a lot. Think about the power of images!

-Clearly discuss and analyze how and why your selected Mascots and /or team logos contain suspect and questionable imagery

-Conduct research into this topic and your chosen mascots/team logos. Your research will help you introduce how such images are indeed problematic, and reinforce the tensions surrounding how we have yet to (or have recently started) come to terms with these issues. With your research, have any teams change mascots/logos because of public demand? Have debates ranged about teams who have not changed logos?

-Bibliographies must have at least 5 sources, two of which are to be peer-reviewed library sources. The rest can be Internet sources. But researchers beware: much rubbish is found on the net, as most are very well aware. With your Internet sources, I would like you to find discussions about this issue, highlighting the voice of those who this issue impacts most. I rarely allow Internet sources, but with this topic, I think you can find some really useful discussions out there.

Powerpoint parameters: 

-Create a powerpoint presentation of at least 5 slides, but no more than 10 slides

-Format of Powerpoint: at least 1 slide introducing the topic/problem of mascots/team logos and misrepresentation, at least one slide for each of your 2 selected mascots/team logos with images (with each, analyze the images themselves and how they reinforce stereotypes and delve into the history and raging debates for each), 1 slide presenting 1 example of how a team changed its mascot/logo because of the political/cultural implications, discuss the history, debates, and why the team decided to change. With this slide take a side as to whether more teams should change; reinforce your stance with points. And finally, 1 slide should have be your bibliography or list of every source consulted.

It is easier for me if Powerpoints are saved and uploaded as either a powerpoint doc or as a PDF. If your own computer does not have/support powerpoint, all library computers certainly do.

Research: with this assignment, as with all assignments and exams, Academic Integrity matters. Books, articles, images pulled from the web, images scanned from books, and videos must be properly cited. You are to cite your sources using the Chicago Manual of Style (Author/Date) format. I offer some examples of citation:

If you directly quote a sentence or paraphrase an idea from a source, using the Chicago Manual of Style (Author/Date), simply place an in-text (or in-slide) citation at the end of the sentence or bullet point. It should appear as follows:

“Be sure to cite your sources” (Fenton, 2016, p. 1-2). Here is the breakdown of the in-text citation: Author’s last name, publication date of course, and page number.

Rubric

A= This powerpoint is exceptional in every way. You have clearly thought carefully about the purpose of the exercise and clearly communicated your ideas. You include a thought provoking response and ideas reveal deep thought and analysis that demonstrates a good amount of time, thought and reflection went into this assignment. Your powerpoint is not only thoughtful and impressively well organized, but indicates a further degree of intellectual engagement with your evaluation of your chosen object than what is facilitated by class alone.

B= This powerpoint is generally good, but not spectacular. You did everything required with competence and with successful results. Your powerpoint is thoughtful and clearly-articulated, but there may be some minor issues with content and citation that prevent it from achieving an even higher grade. Overall, your work is good but does not demonstrate the highest degree of intellectual analysis.

C= This powerpoint is average. While your powerpoint accomplishes almost everything required, the material presented (content) does not demonstrate much thoughtful analysis. There may be issues regarding citation. The clarity of organization might be problematic. Or your ideas/strategies to better contextualize your selection object are not well developed or thought out.

D= This powerpoint does not meet the standards of thought, clarity, and analysis expected. Either your overall presentation is flawed, poorly thought out, incomprehensible, sloppily presented or a combination thereof. There might also be serious problems fulfilling the requirements of the assignment. Powerpoibts that do not properly engage the assignment but still demonstrate some effort will receive this grade.

F= This powerpoint is unacceptable. Either you did not meet the requirements, or did not follow instructions or did not meet the minimum standards of quality.
