Extra, Extra Read All About It!!

Language and Literacy skills are all about reading, speaking, listening, and writing in preschool learning. With both language and literacy, it enhances communication for preschool children to openly express themselves in various ways. However, during early speech and language development, children will grasp and learn skills that are majorly important to the development of literacy.

· Parents We Need You!!!

Covid-19 is not our master. Learning must continue. Parents are now our first teachers. We, as teachers understand that we have had a gap in the learning process of our children. We are concerned that the children are missing out on practicing majority of the aspects in their language development skills. We now consider need for continuous learning, importance of having home-based learning, and close monitoring of these aspects. Continuous practice, creativity, and higher acquisition of knowledge will enhance all language and literacy skills (Murata & Tan, 2017).

· The Importance of Building Language and Literacy Skills:

Building language and literacy skills in the early years is so important. It helps preschool children build several language and literacy concepts that we will cover these next few weeks. The concepts are as follows: Identifying letters/sounds of the alphabet, spelling their name, building words, writing their first/last name, reading 3-4-word sentences, and identify rhyming words, and syllables.

· At-Home Language and Literacy skills to Try at Home

Here below are some suggested activities to work at home with your child to develop their language and literacy skills:

1. Language Concepts:

Identifying Alphabets/Name, Writing Name/Simple words/sentences, Reading 3-4-word sentences:

Activities may include children using magnetic letters to spell their name or build words. Alphabet picture cards to play letter match-up, Children can use playdough to mold letters of the alphabet. Letter Strips with child’s name in highlight to practice handwriting skills of letters, name or simple words.

2. Literacy Concepts:

Identifying Sounds of alphabet, Syllables, and Rhyming words/pictures.

These activities may include viewing Rock-n-Learn Alphabet sounds to watch letter sound formation of 26 alphabets, picture cards of rhyming to identify pictures that have the same ending sound, Parent can create Name cards and or simple words cards for child to clamp the syllables sounds they hear and give the number of syllables for each.

Here you will find a list of Websites for parents to use to assist their child/children in language and literacy concepts. There are also hands-on activities to work at home with their child during these challenging times.
