· Math is Easy as 1,2, or 3!!

Children use math all day long! During their everyday activities, children develop skills of counting, sorting, identifying colors, and much more. However, it is important to know your child’s math skills that they are developing. Some math, skills we do cover most times overlap into some science concepts we may cover!!!! During the next few weeks, we are focusing on the following 4 math concepts: Counting/Number Sense, Addition and Subtraction, Measurement and Data and lastly Geometry.

Parents we understand we have had a gap in our children’s mathematical learning during this Covid-19 pandemic. However, we are here together to work as a team to make sure that our children are still being encouraged but continuously working progressing through these skills at home. We are asking our parents to make sure we participate in online virtual learning with teachers as well as practicing one on one with your child/children. We now consider the need for home-based learning. The importance of home-based learning for our children is to for us to continue to enforce and reinforce mathematical concepts that we are teaching. We appreciate you all for your hard work and help with working with our children to grasp the essential skills needed.

· The Importance of Building Mathematical Skills

Math is an important skill for preschool children. Learning key concepts of math provides children vital but simple skills. These skills will help children count, problem-solve, understand basic shapes, and develop their own sense of spatial awareness.

· At-Home Math Activities to Try at Home

Here below are some suggested activities to work at home with your child to develop and or master the 4 basic concepts of math:

1. Counting/Number Sense: Children can use counting bears to sort, count, or develop pattern. Parents can create math cards from poster boards by colors, to sort by color, or math counting mats to count the number of bears by color, along with identifying numbers on the mats.

2. Geometry:

Create a “Shape Wheel” to learn their basic shapes. Print the shape wheel from theteachingmama.org The parent will draw 3the shapes also on clothes pins for children to match the shapes to the wheel.

“Building Shapes” - Children will use colored craft sticks of their choice and form and build different shapes.

3. Addition and Subtraction:

The parent can create addition and subtraction number sentences on index cards. The children can use counting cubes or bears to help them answer the subtraction or addition problem.

4. Measurement and Data:

The children can do many things in this area from using counting cubes to measure objects in length or graphing shapes by used all sorts of object mats..
