Why make an Outline? Creating an outline for a research paper helps you organize ideas and structure before you start writing. It takes a little while at the beginning but saves lots of time in the end. An outline:

Organizes your thinking Works as a checklist for needed information and images Helps you estimate how long your paper will be Keeps you focused on the main points so you don't go off on a tangent Structures your argument in a clear, logical way

What is an Outline? An Outline is a series of bullet points (usually numbered), organized to show the structure and elements of your research paper. It is not the text of the research paper. That comes later.

An Outline will look something like this (https://www.austincc.edu/tmthomas/sample%20outline%201.htm) .

How to Outline an Architecture Paper: These are the elements you will need to identify in your Outline. Everyone's Outline will be different depending on the type of research project chosen. The guide below shows what you will need to include in an Outline for a Compare and Contrast Research Paper:

1. Introduction- 1. Identify both works of architecture 2. Summarize your thesis (https://examples.yourdictionary.com/thesis-statement-

examples.html) about the architectural relationship and significance. 3. Identify necessary images - Insert a captioned image of each work, side by side, so the

reader can get the overall impression of the architectural works. 2. Introductory Information - Bullet point the basic information about each work of architecture.

These details include: 1. Name 2. Place 3. Civilization 4. Time period

5. Building type 3. Compare and Contrast - Bullet point up to five or six significant points of comparison or

contrast between the works using the following list of architectural systems. Each bullet point will become a full paragraph (with images) to form the body of the research paper: 1. Site Context: Urban, Rural, Topography, Resources 2. Cultural Context: Social, Political, Religious, Technical or Economic 3. Scale, Order and Organization: Size, Proportion, Orientation, Geometry, Hierarchy, Axis,

Symmetry, Module, Massing, etc 4. Program and Circulation: Approach, Threshold, Entrance, Ambulation, Experiential Sequence,

Spatial Relationships, Use and Purpose 5. Structure: Trabeated or Arcuated, Vaulted, Domed, Corbelled, Excavated... 6. Materiality and Technology: Stone, Concrete, Wood, Combination 7. Construction process: Design, measurement, logistics, challenges 8. Light: Natural light, Openings, Glazing, Artificial Light 9. Surface: Ornamentation, Surface Articulation, Texture, Material, Color

10. Other: Something peculiar to the work that makes it significant. 4. Conclusion - This is where each point will be tied back to your thesis about the significance of

the relationship between the historical and modern work of architecture. Bullet point your major conclusions and how they support your thesis.
