As you work on your Paper Two rough drafts, there are some basic things to remember. This list represents the minimum requirements for an acceptable rough draft. 1.  This paper is a five paragraph essay.  Anything less than the prescribed five paragraph essay structure listed in the handouts will not be acceptable.

2.  Intro paragraphs should open with basic information in the first sentence.  This includes story title and author.

3.  The intro paragraph must end in a thesis statement.

4.  Each of the three body paragraphs must contain two quotes. This means your paper will have a total of SIX quotes—no more, no less.  Anything less will not be accepted.  Your paper one was essentially the format for writing a sound body paragraph.

5.  At least half of your quotes must be long enough for long formatting.  Long quotes must be formatted correctly.  Two few and/or improperly formatted long form quotes will result in your paper being returned without comments/credit.  (This means you should never indent after a long form quote, as no paragraph will ever end with a quote, in this class.)

6.  All quotes must be properly introduced and formatted, regardless if they are short or long quotes.   7.  No paragraph should ever end with a quote.  Further, no topic sentence will ever introduce a quote.

8. Body paragraphs should begin with topic sentences that contain clear main ideas.  They should also end with transitional sentences. 9. Concluding paragraph should be well-thought out.  No 2-3 sentence afterthoughts for a concluding paragraph.

10. Each paragraph in this paper should be 6-7 sentences in length.  This means you have an extra sentence, if you need it.  The extra sentence can be used to set up evidence, further explain quotes, help transition, etc.  It cannot be used for a topic sentence.  Topic sentences should be single sentences. 11.  All papers should contain titles.

12.  All papers should contain page numbers in MLA style in the header of your paper.  You cannot manually type in the numbers, you MUST use the “Insert Page Number” feature in Word. 13.  Papers should be written in the THIRD PERSON, PRESENT TENSE, ACTIVE VOICE.

14.  Paper should be proofread and revised thoroughly at least once. Follow the handouts.  The number one reason students do not do well in English 100 is because they do not print out and take the time to decipher and use the handouts.

This list represents the minimum requirements for an acceptable rough draft.
