For this paper, you will need to carry out research over the assigned topic. The paper will be written in English and must be between 400-600 words. You must follow MLA guidelines when writing this paper. If you do not, the instructor will automatically deduct 20% off the grade.

Here are some basic recommendations for writing this paper:

Topic for Reflective Paper: CROSS-CULTURAL AWARENESS

 Due to immigration patterns, size and history, the United States is culturally diverse. Whether we live in a small town or large city, it is likely that we will encounter people belonging to another culture. Some of these cultures resemble ours while others are very different than ours. Each member of a unique culture holds their own world view.

As you interact with others, often you find that their perspective is different than yours and this sometimes leads to disagreement. In a globalized world, how do we get along with people who possess differing beliefs, values and world views? How do we keep an open-mind and respect others’ beliefs without becoming offended? How do we avoid trying to persuade them to think as we do?

In this essay, you are to research cross-cultural awareness. And, write about three closely related benefits of expanding cross-cultural awareness. Make sure to pick one general area and develop three sub points from it. Do not present three general benefits of cross-cultural awareness. You will suffer a major point deduction if you do. Be specific! See examples below:

Specific benefit: cross cultural awareness improves teamwork ability

a) encourages healthy risk taking

b) blends complementary strengths

c) builds trust

Specific benefit: cross cultural awareness facilitates introspection

a) this leads to improved tolerance and understanding of others

b) this helps identify one’s own preconceptions and biases

It is common for the novice to attempt to cover a lot of ground in his paper. A novice believes that everything that he has learned after researching the topic must be included (in a three-page paper!) – it does not. How will you ever truly learn about a topic if you stay surface level, including several loosely related ideas in your writing? Focus your writing, pick one specific area, and identify three tightly related sub points. You will learn more about the topic, and you will also enlighten the reader. Ultimately, it will be more productive and easier to write the paper if you do!

This is the basic structure for your paper. Develop each point in a minimum of one paragraph.

Below are some recommendations to improve your writing. Avoid these types of words, statements or other writing errors:

Vague “feeling” words

special, important, great, sad, beautiful, exciting…

False absolute qualifiers (few things are all or nothing, always or never!)

all, nothing, everybody, everyone, no one, nobody, always, never, everything, nothing…

Definitive/ false statements/ stereotypes/ hasty generalizations

African-Americans enjoy soul food.

Texans are more conservative than New Yorkers.

Young people are entitled.

Millennials aren’t as hard-working as their parents.

People on welfare should work.

Colloquialisms/ slang/ informal language

Your paper should not read like a conversation that you would have with friends.

We’ve got to do better than this.

What goes around comes around.

People get tired of being disrespected over and over.

Citizens need to figure out what they want.

Redundant expressions

Unless you quote a statement, the reader assumes that what you are stating are your own thoughts and opinions. Consequently, avoid expressions like: I think, I believe, and in my personal opinion, etc.

Addressing the reader as “you”

You can get more out of life by working harder.

Try: Hard work results in more life satisfaction.

You should spend time with people who enrich your life.

Try: People should spend time with others who enrich their life.

You will understand the meaning of culture after reading this paragraph.

Try: This paragraph defines culture.

Avoid dangling prepositions, when possible*

Which box did you put the shoe in? The shoe is in which box?

When I arrive, who do I need to ask for? When I arrive, I should ask for whom?
