CHEM& 140 – Checkpoint 7 – Show It HW Name ________________________________ Section ___

The notation at the beginning of each problem refers to the location of the problem in the textbook (6th edition of Introductory Chemistry by Tro). Most odd-numbered problems have answers in the back of the book. The Workbook sometimes includes answers in parentheses after a problem.

1. (CH9 #3) What is white light? Colored light?

2. (CH9 #8 and #12) Why should excess exposure to gamma rays, x-rays, and UV rays be avoided? And, what type of electromagnetic radiation is used in mobile phones?

3. There are two major types of emission spectra, a continuous spectrum and a line spectrum. What is the difference between these two? Draw examples of each. Specify typical substances/items that produce each type of emission spectrum. (Your lab will help with this question!)

4. (CH9 #14) Use the Bohr model to explain why the emission spectrum of the hydrogen atom consists of distinct lines at specific wavelengths.

5. Complete pages 118-119 of the Workbook. Insert a photo of your work on page 119.

Graphical user interface, text, application, email Description automatically generated

6. Complete pages 122-125 of the Workbook. Insert a photo of your answers for #5 though #10 on pages 124-125.

7. Complete page 120 of the Workbook. Insert a photo of your work on #6 and #7 on page 120.

8. Do problem #2 on page 121 of the Workbook. I’ve included a few questions to get you started on dealing with the units of frequency, which can be a little challenging.

A radio station broadcasts electromagnetic radiation at a frequency of 590. kHz.

a) Fill in the relationship: 1 Hertz (Hz) = _____ s–1

b) What is another way to write the unit s–1? (s raised to -1 power can be written as fraction)

c) What does the prefix “k” in kHz represent?

d) What is the wavelength in meters of these radio waves? Show your work. Make sure to include units and cancel them out!

9. Do problem #6 on page 121 of the Workbook. Show your work. Make sure to include units and cancel them out!

10.

a) Do problem #4 on page 121 of the Workbook. Show your work. Make sure to include units and cancel them out!

b) Would a photon with a wavelength of 12.9 nm have a larger or smaller energy? Explain.
