Rubric for the Argumentative Research Papers 4 and 5

Both assignments of this paper are the same paper. Your object in this paper is to

choose a topic, take a position concerning that topic and argue that position, supporting it

with at least five outside sources. The paper should run to five to seven pages in length.

While you are expressing an opinion, you cannot make your argument only on the basis

of opinion or feelings. All of the previous papers that you have written in this class offer

transferable skills for approaching this assignment. If you interview an expert, which is a

citable source, you are creating a narrative. If you have any personal experience in the

matter it is also narrative. Expressing your position is also narrative. When you express

an opinion and react to one that is counter to your own, that is also response. As you

gather your outside sources, you are weighing their merits, as to their logos, ethos, and

pathos. You judge how well those sources convey their intent, how they are written, and

if they are credible. That also is response. The outside material that you sought and utilize

in your essay is synthesis in that you merge this material into your paper. If you measure

the merits of your argument against one that is counter to it, you are engaged in synthesis.

At nearly every level of this paper you are using analytical and evaluative mental

processes.

If you choose a literary topic your object is to say whether something is good or

bad or if your like or dislike it. You should choose some aspect of some work of literature

and look at a theme, use of symbols or archetypes, use of sensory language, or any other

common element used in fiction, poetry or drama and attempt to open the chosen work to

a better understanding. If you have chosen to go this route, please take some time to talk

to me.

This paper is to be written in an MLA format and it must use MLA guidelines for

in-text (parenthetical) citations and works cited page listings. Please note the examples I

have posted. All your margins should be at one inch (excepting the page numbering),

lines double-spaced with the proper page number header on the upper right hand corner

on each page and the MLA left hand header on the first page.

You might also look in your Rules for Writers for your MLA guidelines and an

example research paper.

The assignment 4 is the work in progress version. You must participate in a peer

review and then complete any surveys that are assigned with the peer review. The more

of the paper you have completed, the more feedback you call receive. You must also

include your works cited page with the assignment 4.

The final and completed version is assignment 5. You must submit a hard copy

and make two electronic submissions on BB that will be set up for that purpose.

Remember on the BB submission (not turnitin.com) you must write a commentary at the

end of at least 250 words about the assignment.
