Nobel Lecture Response Paragraphs

Toni Morrison and 1993 Nobel Lecture

For this first assignment, you will use Morrison’s lecture and your observation to compose three

paragraphs.

1. For the INTRODUCTION paragraph, start with a general idea or larger context for the

quote and its relevance. For example, there are a number of larger, looming contexts that

affect all of us. What does this quote make you think of? Start there. If you are familiar

with a method for introductory paragraphs, use one.

2. In the BODY paragraph, you should include your quote, paraphrase, and explanation. Be

sure to use the introductory wording (Morrison states, As Morrison puts it, According to

Morrison, Morrison herself writes, Morrison maintains)

3. To compose your CONCLUSION paragraph, review your introduction and body

paragraph. Then create a paragraph that ties together what you have written.

While there is no established length for a paragraph, for this initial assignment you should aim

for at least six sentences per paragraph. This length is appropriate for 1302-level writing.
